Hi a question to any UK podiatrists who do foot manipulations - I have always beleived that this would be a great tool to have in my armoury, but have looked at several different courses of varying cost and content. Can anyone give advice firstly on where we as podiatrists stand legally doing manips' and secondly what am I looking for in a course/training can anyone recommend any? Oh and Thirdly if anyone uses manip's do you get responses??

    thanks everyone

    Re: foot manipulations???

    Hi Barty

With regards to the question of where we stand as Podiatrists undertaking mobilisation. A number of courses exist that come with Society approval which means (assuming Society membership on your part) that you will undertake a course recognised by them for insurance purposes and will be covered by your existing Society insurance. If, as a Podiatrist you belong to another professional body e.g. Institute or BChA you would need to check they cover you for mobilisation work once trained.

Training can be found in a number of places. I have a bias in that I run such courses throughout the year but on Pod Arena you will find also Tedjed who has a course coming up this year in the UK.

Additionally there are other places in the UK that may provided some form of mobilisation techniques training. I believe that SOBSART may do this. Though I do not know about insurance cover.

The Society of Sports Therapists also provide training if you have a sports therapy background. Again you would want to check insurance cover

Hope this helps a little. Do feel free to PM me if you want to know more regards courses.

I'm sure others will be along with info soon.

If you want to PM me I can send you a link to the courses I provide.

I took Ted Jedynak's FMT level 1&2 last fall. I will be taking level 3 this spring. I am having great results with my cases, including both long standing pronation related changes and acute injury related subluxations. I would like to take others to compare, increasing knowledge is always a good thing. I have colleagues who have done a few different courses and found this one most helpful and easy to implement. I would like to learn more soft tissue release, but have a good massage therapist I can refer to.

    Hi Sarah
I think exposure to varied approaches to mobilisation over a period of time is essential both for the rich diversity of skill it can give you and because it exposes you to different rationale behind techniques. If you get a chance to learn some soft tissue work go for it.

    Hi bartybp,

I'm based in Australia. I have done Ted Jedynak's course and love the results I am having using his course. I would certainly recommend adding mobilistation techniques to your clinic.

    Hi Bartybp

I have done Ian's courses and it has changed my approach to patient management.
I still use orthoses but the rationale for them is clearer.
Also my surface anatomy knowledge has improved.

I am interested in doing Ted Jedynak's course. I am currently studying a podiatry degree at the University of Southampton, which I am due to complete this year. I am also a qualified Osteopath so I am particularily interested in manual therapy in general. I am also undertaking a research project to look at the effects of physical therapy on the range of movement of the foot and ankle. I would be gratefull if anyone could provide me with any information about there experiences of using foot mobilisation techniques and also what their patients feel about it....e.g. treatment outcomes, patient satisfaction etc

Just did Ian's http://www.podiatry-arena.com/podiatry-forum/member.php?u=11 course and this seemed like as good a place as any to say thanks for a great weekend and give a thumbs up. That was the soft tissue mobilisation course but got some good feedback for the ankle mobs course while I was there.

Started incorporating into clinical work straight away, and I'm looking forward to tracking the long term results.

Been on Ian's soft tissue course and getting great results so went on his ankle mob course and can only sing his praises again. I'm looking forward now to do the foot mobs with Ian, I had been on a foot mob course before but like Ian's manner better so will be going on his foot mob course when it next comes round. Got nothing to say but positives about Ian's courses big thumbs up!

I have been on two of Ian's courses now and can attest that they are well presented, highly informative and have an immediate clinical application. They run regularly through the year across the UK and are well worth checking out.

    Regards,
