    Aloha,

Did they just use commercial foam insoles and not the new advanced composite insoles as tested for the US Department of Defense for research grant SBIR A11-109 "Advanced Composite Insoles for the Reductions of Stress Fractures" by Diapedia LLC and Kingetics LLC ?

    Quote
"neither insole made the MBs more comfortable to wear. With little evidence to support wholesale adoption of insoles in MBs, their use by military personnel can only be recommended on a case-by-case basis."

We can now make insoles out of newer stronger more protective materials perhaps we should further test them as well.

    Aloha,

I believe any research into limiting the injury rates of our soldiers is worthy.

This was a good research paper but with only 7 subjects.

Again i will stress that often we do not descibe the footwear conditions we are testing with enough detail.

The Military Boots MB are descibed as a "standard MB is a rigid boot composed of an upper made of leather and a rubber sole and its mass is 0.90 Kg."

Does this mean that there was no midsole built into the boot which would be different from the "standard" US military boot?
What type of rubber was used in the boot?
How rigid is rigid, what was the bending strength or modulus of elasticity at the MPJ's of the boots?

The control running shoes RS were described as, "The participants wore their own running shoes."

How does that describe the footwear being tested ?!!
    How much did they weigh?
What type of midsole material and durometer were used?
Did they have insoles or orthotics in thier running shoes?

The insoles used were described as,

insole A: "an ethyl vinyl acetate EVA insole with a sculpted heel and antislip texture underside and a toweling top surface."

insole B: "using Sorbothane technology and consists of 100% polyurethane foam for cushoning and covered in a breathable polyester fabric"

    - How thick were they?
-What was the durometer (shore A) of the insoles?
    -How much did they weigh?

Please if others are to be able to repeate these research testing protocals we must have more discriptive information as to the footwear conditions.

Another area i have question with is how much information can we get from force plates?

It would seem that if the footwear we build change the dynamics of gait there would be difference between data obtained from the outside the shoe condition to inside the shoe condition. In other words if we build orthotics systems that transfer loads then a simple force plate will not be enough to measure what is truely occuring in the shoe.

It would be nice to see a comparison of the data from in shoe sensors to force plates. I know it is not a direct comparison but it help us determine affect (load transfer) of our mechanical shoe and orthotic system. EMG and 3D motion analysis would also be very nice.

In a more ideal world military funding for research and development of safer combat boots would be on par with other more esoteric expensive military endevors.

Lastly the blanket statement/conclusion in the abstract seems to be stretching it, "neither insole made the military boots more comfortable to wear. With little evidence to support wholesale adoption of insoles in Military Boots."

I think this was good research and should be expanded upon.

    Aloha,

Perhaps the wheels of scientific advancement are on a greased track?

"These analyses provided little support for a reduction in injury risk after the switch from boots to running shoes for PT in BCT."

"it is recommended that recruits who are susceptible to injuries mediated through excessive knee loads select the cross-trainer for their running activities."

" results clearly show that boots can absorb a considerable share of the impact energy and decrease impact loads transmitted to the lower leg under vertical loading"

"little evidence to support wholesale adoption of insoles in MBs"

Perhaps it is time to switch tracks?

    Aloha,

Does anyone know what a "definite-regulator" is?

"One hundred infantry recruits will be randomly assigned to receive experimental infantry boots (DEFINITE-REGULATOR) or standard issued boots (modified Belleville 390 TROP)."

How could we get the IDF to research our boot system as well?

Although we don't have a definite-regulator in our system we do have an advanced composite spring levered orthotic that may improve the survivability and mission readyness of their operators according to our US Department of Defense results for SBIR-A11-109 "Advanced Composite Insoles for the Reduction of Stress Fractures."

This may sound like an advertisement pictch to some or an honest offer of live and limb saving technology to others, depending on your needs and missions...

    Aloha,

"Today, Brill has a far more comfortable boot that is being field tested by the military. It?s shaped to the Israeli foot, Horovitz said,"

Could someone define an "Israeli Foot" for me please.
Is there a Russian, Cech and Canadian foot as well?

    http://www.timesofisrael.com/last-israeli-army-boot-manufacturer-nears-closure/

I am missing the math logic on this one.

"Price is a perennial issue. The Defense Ministry can purchase US-made boots from manufacturers in Michigan or Illinois for roughly $70 a pair, using a small fraction of the annual US aid dollars, which must be spent in the US. Brill?s boots are paid for with Israeli tax money and cost roughly $110.

Opposition leader MK Shelly Yachimovich, a supporter of workers? rights and of unionized labor, vented her frustration during a 2012 Knesset meeting. ?Is there any logic to [the fact] that my son who serves in the army will walk around with American boots (note--that were freely paid for by the citizens and taxpayers of the US) at the expense of workers? jobs in the factory?? she asked. ?Is there any sort of national logic to that??

Tell the US Department of Defense that polyurethane boots are a serious problem? Which I do agree with but for other safety and functional reasons due to our research results from SBIR A11-109 paid for by the DoD and AMRMC.

"Structurally, he said, the US boot has a polyurethane sole, which means that it has a very short shelf life and is likely to crumble underfoot when a reservist takes it out of the closet once a year. [The Brill boot sole is made of direct injection dual-density rubber, which affords the boot a long shelf life and was one of the IDF?s initial boot requirements.]

Aiding those who aid us with better safer shoes is a wise decision.

Would someone please let science prevail?
Would someone also tell me why we are spending tax money raised by the citizens of the United States on this?
I have never heard anyone else claim that foot shapes are predicated on nationality, scary thought. Wars have been fought over such backward beliefs.
Biometrics are biometrics just get them right.

The current HWIB still is too heavy and way under powered and under armored IMHO.

But who am i to comment on this topic.
I am tainted because we developed and tested a far better light weight hot weather combat boot yet our research funding gets diverted to junk psuedo-science like this.

President Trump how about some help here?
We would like to make America Great again.
One safe soldier at a time...

    Aloha,
Even though thread is only one person making comments every person is affected by the ability of our soldiers to complete their missions and to come home safely.

Natick army and navy testing labs has hired Albert Adams as their Subject Matter Expert in footwear and this is the result of the army's efforts to improve the jungle combat boots.

    https://www.pressreader.com/usa/honolulu-star-advertiser/20170324/282840780875187

More air holes so more swamp water can get in the boot.
More blown 100% EVA foam, because you must always be AR-670-1 compliant even if it dumbs down your technology and adds to the boot weight without offering an increase in protection.
More color changes from cold war black to Persian Golf desert tan to now Coyote Brown.
More dancing around the fact that serious puncture resistance requires hardened ballistic materials as used in helmets and body armor not just a "ballistic fabric-like layer."
Natick tried packing boots with fabric Kevlar last century in the 1980's and found that soldiers don't like wearing 3 pound boots.

WE CAN AND SHOULD DO MORE!
