I have it on the best of authority (only second hand!) that Alan Bennett was writing about a decent man doing his best who was swamped by the powers-that-be, but who in the end won by default. Bennett was very closely involved in the casting, and I gather that is why Palin was chosen to play the chiropodist and Denolm Elliot the doctor. Looked at in that light, I don't think that it was negative - anyway, the Times owes us one for the recent Orthopaedic twaddle!

Just catching up with a previous post. Bennett has used "chiropody" and chiropodists" as a focus in several of his works. Talking Heads (BBC), monologue by Pat Routledge as Ms Fozzard is spell bounding and the only peice of drama I have seen which sets out to depict the effects on relatives when presented with health care information buy a specialist regarding a relative (brother in this case) coping with the after effects of a CVI. Just brilliant.

Ralph Graham was the podiatry advisor on Private Function and appears on the film's credits. He did a remarkable job and the depiction of clinical furniture, instrumentation and carry case were period and the antics of the domicillary visit and surgery were all in character for the time. Cringe as we may now, that is what happened then and has been caught in glorious technicolour for prosperity. Well done Handmade Films.

Ah Mark, that would be telling.

As you know I was in San Francisco last May giving a lecture at a Sexology Coference. My topic was the psycho-sexual aspects of shoe design and sumptuary law. To the unininiated feet and shoes were used as a means of safe sex during symphilis epidemics in medievil times, both in occidental and oriental societies My lecture was put in the S&M section of the conference program. I was amused to learn the S&M crowd thought my topic was wierd. Still it made light relief for the audience interspaced between How best to suspend clients from the ceiling with skin hooks and duty of care consideration concerning accredited Madams, when engaged in client directed genital electric shocks. What a norrow life I lead.

Jock itch is well documented. The potential association with feet and the genitalia cannot be overlooked. Thrush for example may spread through toe sucking and toe masturbation. In a similar way inquisitive young men may transfer warts from the feet to the penis via hand contact. Early sexual contact increases the risk of cervical cancer and the role of verruca pedis is not an area that has been researched to any depth. Whilst it may be a different strain there may also be association. If so this might strengthen the argument to treat painless verrucae in young people. I am sometimes called upon to give sage advice to an n eager listening audience on infection control to fetishists and foot frolickers.

I would love to one day. We have not actually met although corresponded but I look forward to reading his biography. It will make most interesting reading.
