After an arduous 4 month training block which unfortunately left very little time to visit podiatry arena, my fans who showed concern will be pleased to know all is well and DaFlip is back. By the way Robbie.I, i will not call Dr Kirby, Kevvers again. Maybe all the training i was doing at the time was causing some sort of neural overload patttern making me write complete junk, but fortunately that seems to have abbated for the moment.

I have a major track meet i am hoping to gain selection for in 2008, hence the training, which i hope will launch me into the next level of athletic super stardom and sponsorship. Stay tuned...but i can tell you just a little, my run throughs for the hundred have been a very impressive 19.26PB with a flying start and and all is looking well for doing 420 of them. I have just got reach that qualifying target and if all continues to plan i may be able to just run under my current PB of 5:39.45. Oh the pain of the lactic sessions, it just burns and burns. My only cocnern is I think maybe i might need a real time ultrasound to determine if i have a lateral ankle sprain, but the podiatrist i have been seeing wasn't sure if they should
a>do it for fear it might hurt me in some way, something about ultrasonic radiation, the machine being in use since Curie's time and "by the way my lab coat isn't working properly" so we didn't do it! Now what, i mean what if I really have hurt myself.
b>use a biomechanical model of explaination, but which one? Should we just say pronation issue and forget the offending tissue because if we don't address the pronation issue the injury won't heal? Even though i must confess the injury occurred jumping over the bar at the hotel i was at and landing akwardly , mind you not spilling a drop of liquid.
c>refer me to the PT because the ankle is not the foot

I am so confused right now. So i figure i need to learn some more and i have decided to find a flight all the way into a little conference i have been privately emailed about. It is in Hobart, Australia in May and i am thinking of heading on down on the long haul flight into Sydney and then Hobart. The question i have is regarding the social events planned for May. I have been on a tight training program my coach only allowing me to drink between Tuesday to Sunday, maximum of 16.5 drinks per day. So here is the problem, the only things i can find are opening night drinks and a dinner dance on the saturday. Luckily for me this fits in with training, but it also leads me to wonder what social events will be in place for the Wed, Thurs and Fridays. Is there any such thing as a Fellows or Diplomats evening which i may attend? Any specific bars which will be open till late?

I am very much looking forward to meeting up with everyone who attends. I will gladly have a drink with anybody there, so come introduce yourselves but just remember i have a limit and don't try and get me in trouble with the coach.
    Kindest regards
    Michael Flip

Generally at APodC conferences, there is only the welcome drinks and the dinner/dance. I have not yet heard of any Fellows dinner planned (though there usually is). Can't say I will be partaking in much myself this year at the APodC conference as the Arena'ettes will be in tow.

Thanks for the reply Craig. Sorry to hear you won't be partaking to much this year. One less major player doesn't hurt my chances though does it.

Just got back from an epic swim set which my coach has put into the track program for a bit of variety. Luckily i only had 13 drinks last night or it might have been a bit difficult. Posted a PB for the 50m freestyle of 67.45 secs, on fire. All is looking good for qualification for 2008. But man the pain of those lactic sets, it just burns and burns. Checked out the websites of Hobart and see there is a pool close to the conference, so i can continue some training. Just looking for an elite level track to do a little running while i am there, so if anyone knows then please post it on here. Also if anyone is interested in a run or swim feel free to join the Flip, don't expect to keep up with me, but company to and from the pool or track is nice.

Funny when you are swimming up and down what you think about. It got me to thinking of an email a friend sent through yesterday and they were recounting the previous conferences of APodC (see this year ). I am sure they mentioned there have been Diplomat dinners but i cannot find a Diplomat program in Australia so how this is possible i don't know. I am sure my friend said there was a more open invitation night out than what the Fellows dinner sounds like, with some sponsors and proceeds going to some podiatric research. Maybe if anyone on this forum has knowledge on this they can expand for me.
In the meantime i am going to to try and learn about the link between Curie's x-ray machine, their relevance to me sending someone for a film now in 2007, the degree of radiation i will get on the plane to Hobart versus a set of plain films of my foot, and expand my knowledge on why i shouldn't send for films because other health professions will be sending for them. The cumulative fatigue it's killing me.
    All the best everybody,
    DaFlip

  5. Dear Mr DaFlip,
Since the inaugural Diplomats Dinner at the Canberra conference a few years ago the Diplomats Dinner has increased in popularity.

Traditionally at the end of the days conference proceedings we would head to the pre-arranged venue and settle in for a "liquid" dinner. Plans are well underway for this years function and details will be available closer to the event so interested parties can make their arrangements. Please don't worry though I will give you enough notice that you will be able to plan your training schedule around this social event.

Generally speaking it hasn't been to hard to get "thirsty" conference delgates to this event in the past, so I hope you will be able to fit this event in your hectic social calendar.

Good luck with the training and I look forward to meeting you at the 2007 Diplomats Dinner!

    Kind Regards,
    Phil Hartshorne

Sorry for the slow reply Mr Hartshorne, please feel free to call me Dr DaFlip. I strained my hamstring at training the other day i think doing the clean and jerk, and everything has been slightly hectic since then. Oh the pain of it all. I mean it could also have been those lactic sets, i mean they just burn and burn and then bam! I am just hoping it does not have a negative impact on preparation for 2008. I am thinking of getting either a real time ultrasound to assess it, or someone with good knowledge on STJ function, not sure which.

Thank you for confirming the Diplomats "liquid" dinner. As long as i stay in my guidelines of 16 drinks or less per evening this sounds like a conference to be heading too. The coaches words keep ringing in my ears "16 or less".

I feel i could almost appoint myself as somewhat of an unoffical ambassador to the Australian Podiatry Council. I mean the pulicity this is generating must be worth big dollars. It is a promotors dream. I can see it now, DaFlip as the face of the APodC Conference.

Let's get very serious for a moment. The academic program is 1st rate, there really are some good presenters on a wide range of topics with great clinical applications. That's enough serious. The most important part of the whole conference now appears to have been established. Opening night drinks, Diplomats dinner(s) and the dinner/dance. DaFlip may have to fly in early to get in some secret training for both the track and the nights out. I wonder what Hobart in March is like?
I would suggest you too start training now, and i don't mean to keep up with me on the track.
Love and best wishes to all
    DaFlip ;)

    Dear Dr DaFlip,

Hobart is a wonderful small town wrapped around a gentle inlet. As Tasmania is the southern most part of Aus, it is generally a tad colder there than the mainland, but May should see delicious Autumn - fresh days (about 18 - 20 degree celcius)and cool thirsty nights.

My experience of Asutralian Pod Conferences is that of eclectic equality. While there are Diplomat Dinners and Jolly-Good-Fellow Dinners and somesuch things, Aus Pods are friendly and tame, with little in the way of chips on the shoulders. The hierarchy is not very strong in Australia (although we have a small number of surgeons, it is a limited breeding program, with just a few Sires standing at Stud).

If you are hoping to lubricate your passage through this experience with liver wrenching quantities of the good stuff, you will generally find a willing population happy to indulge in spontaneous drinking. Just get gossiping at the breaks, indicate your need to alter your consciousness at regular intervals, and you will find fellow imbibers who will cheerfully join in at every opportunity.

Meanwhile, there is the Cadbury Chocolate Factory tour to consider (now there's MY preferred drug).

    cheers,

    Felicity

    Felicity and all my fans,
do not let the apparent lack of heirarchy fool you. It is well and truely strong. It has become quite apparent those with a specific desire to slice and dice are the bottom feeders of the chain. Obviosly they require referrals for survival, mere scraps from the others. One could suggest they should be more appropriately in tune with the needs of their fellow professionals and it does appear appropriate that surgeons who attend this conference should be purchasing beverages for others where ever possible. Cost irrelevant.

Now the 'liver wrenching qualities' have been predetermined by my coach at 16.5 drinks per day Tuesday to Sunday. I have a very specific level of training aiming for a major track meet in 2008. I won't go into more specifics than i have previosuly for fear of giving my competitors any info, but let's just i a have busted a huge lift this week benching over 15 pounds on the flat bar. The key to me maintaining the rage with my training while i am in Hobart is recovery. It all comes down to recovery. Personally i will be packing my 'roll-up' cobblestone pathway in my baggage. The one metre walk way does wonders for my BP and reduces musculoskeletal overload. 3.2miles in my hotel room on a one metre mat, a little turn at the end and back you go about 5000 times. The life of an elite athlete behind the scenes hey. It is not all the fun and games that most people see. I mean i put in the hard yards. Limit my drinks, lactic sets, cobblestone pathways, the list goes on.

Yet even as an athlete of significant standing my previous offers to appear as the face of the APodC for their promotions for this conference have fallen on deaf ears. I am embarassed to report i have not received any emails from them asking for my further help in promotional work. As a self appointed non-offical ambassador for the APodC i thought the offers would have been here the next day to enlist me in some formal capacity. I have been checking the inbox daily waiting and waiting for them to email with some sort of deal. I may have to take your advice Felicity and go to the Cadbury tour and indulge as some sort of coping strategy for my apparent snubbing by APodC.

    Dr Bowles,
thank you so much for the offer, i will be flying into Hobart from Vegas on the monday. I look forward to meeting you but trust you understand my training and the imposed drinking limit set at 16.5 per day is fixed. Any more and my longitudinal arch may flatten for unkown mechanical and neuromuscular reasons. Then no matter how many times i use the wonderful cobblestone mat i am bringing with me there may be no return. With such a big track year in 2008 i cannot afford to have even the slightest set backs.
Now the only problem is since we have never actually met, how shall i come up and introduce myself. Should i look for a man with a red pullover, a blue hat, a strange voice and an akward sideways shuffling gait as per your avatar?
I will be easier to find since most people say i look like this

I have just been reading the official web page for this conference and there is a quote from a Dr P Bennett saying how good this conference is going to be. Who you may say? I mean where is the quote from me, DaFlip, the peoples champion, a well known face, a person of credibility? I mean they read my stuff on here and start to promote this conference with my ideas but don’t invite me to the party!

Let’s face facts here. The average attendee is more inclined to attend this conference under the realisation there will be adequate social events planned, at both an official and unofficial level with the added bonus of international athletes such as myself in attendance. Surely the APodC in their wisdom should be using DaFlip as the face of this event.

As I have previously stated the conference is first rate, but really, who cares? The attendees of these conferences need to know where the best bars in Hobart are, what clubs open till 6am, who sells Berocca by the boxload. Remember it is the small things which make the difference between being good and great.
Surely the APodC should be investing in the direction its members need. So I hereby volunteer my services to travel into Hobart from my lovely place in Vegas, prior to the conference, all expenses paid by APodC, to investigate the venues which may provide the appropriate requirements for May.

Whilst there I may check out the T’n’F facilities, cause currently I am on fire. Did a 200 repeat yesterday with a blistering run through time of 59.35. I know it was hand timed but that is smoking. Looking good for 2008. Now I am just looking to add to my events for next year and need a couple of small meets in March. Does anyone know if the world podiatry games will be held next year?

Still looking for a swim partner in Hobart by the way. I understand it is daunting, I mean I am DaFlip and all, but hey you gotta start somewhere right?

    Kindest regards
    DaFlip

    Ummm....

If you're truly looking for a wild time, you should consider staying in Vegas.

Hobart is not exactly known as the wildest and craziest city in Australia. It wasn't that long ago that open homosexuality was illegal, let alone having gay-friendly pubs and clubs. That said, I have never remained too sober at APodC conferences, no matter where they are held.

Pretty place though, but probably not in the same league as the "city of sin".

You might need to check your ego at the door, or a few burly timber cutting locals might be less humoured by 'DaFlip' than we.

    LL,

I think my ego will enamour me to the female locals. These burly timber cutting locals will enjoy the introverted style of an elite athlete like DaFlip.

The males however may be another story. They may well feel kind of insecure ssurrounding my physique. Especially as i am now benching 16 pound repeat sets with the flat bar. My chest is cut to the max and now that i have waxed it looks superb if i may so myself. If all else fails my ability to run the 100m in a 19.745 secs PB may enable me to make a speedy exit where required.

LL, correct me if i am wrong here.
    Poddy Surgeon?
Never stayed to sober at conferences before?
Thank you. Point proved. The social calander of this conference is the most important part of the entire proceedings.

It went OK. Hobart is a neat place and have enjoyed that. There was not much clinically relevant stuff (less than the last conference). CP's stuff on knee OA was probably the most clinically important new info. Kylie (sorry forgot last name) info on toe walking was good to know about. So much of what else was talked about, I had heard before or read about.

I thought the conference was excellent and I congratulate the organisers for putting together a thoughtful and diverse program in such a wonderful location. It was very well attended and provided ample opportunity and venues for serious ‘networking’.

    No sign of DaFlip though?

Have a little bit of a study happening with idiopathic toe walkers. The OTs have a tool called the Sensory Profile. We have have a theory that if we have their caregiver fill out this tool they will fit a certain profile. The OT profession alludes to it regularly but there is no proof. We are hoping to complete this with 100+ kids that have an absence of autistic spectrum disorders or disease and therefore add to the literature. We need more kids. If you have any or need more info, please message me here :)
    Thanks
