Big toe keeps popping out of socket

    My 15 year old son has a frequent and painful problem of his big toe popping out the socket.
    He's fairly active and whilst it often happens when he's playing sport - from basketball to karate - it sometimes happens when he's doing nothing at all. Usually he can easily manipulate it back in but in occasions he has to leave it quite some time before he is able to do so.
    It's painful when it moves but the pain resolves when the toe is realigned.
