I have signed a contract to start employment in 2008 with a Podiatrist in North Queensland. He is sponsoring me for a regional sponsored visa (RSMS) and has sent all of his forms off and the fee required. I have gathered all of the information required and am now just waiting for him to forward me the necessary approved forms so that I can apply for my part of the visa (Stage 2).

In the Qualifications and Experience part of the visa application it asks for evidence from a relevant Australian registration or licensing board that the employee holds necessary registration or licensing requirements (if applicable).

Does this mean that I have to register before sending off my application or just provide documentation to prove that I am eligible to register?? I am worried that this will hold up visa process if I have to register now and that if visa is unsuccessful for any reason I will lose a lot of money!!

Any help would be appreciated..can't find answer on websites..D.I.M.A etc.

Footsteps, you don't ever register with the A.Pod.C., they just ensure that you meet the requirements for registration (qualifications +/- exam, depending on the qualification)
Once you have the A.Pod.C. bit of paper, you then register with the Qld Pod Reg Board.

You won't usually be able to register until you are in Australia. The only documentation acceptable for OS registration applicants is the A.Pod.C. certificate (unless you are from NZ)

I came through the RSMS visa. My process involved, skills assessed and ok'd by Australian Podiatry Council, job offer, visa process started. Our biggest hold up was that it took ages to be registered with the NSW Pod board, as they only sit once a month. The immigration department wouldn't except a provisional registration, so had to wait a month for the board to sit and ok it properly. The frustrating thing was that the pod board and immigration office, were in the same building or two doors away from each other (can't remember now), but wouldn't talk to each other. Basically, visa will not be granted until you are officially registered with the Queensland pod board, but this can all be ok'd whilst you are in the UK. i WOULD SEND STUFF OFF ASAP.

Where will you be working??? Goodluck. We've not regretted it once.

When I did mine, as far as I could remember you have to get your registration for the state that you are going to work in. You will find this on the apodc website. It doesnt cost too much.

As for 'society' membership, I am still not a member as I kept up my UK membership, and they told me that they had changed it to international membership which still covered me.

Thanks for the reply...and for all of the other replies. I will be working in Tropical North Queensland..in Cairns doing mainly lower limb bomechanical treatment. I havn't sent my part of visa off yet as it is an RSMS and can't do so until I have certificate from employers part of visa that he has to do first. I am trying to do assessment asap as I have heard it can take ages..how many years ago did you have your skills assessed..was it difficult?

When you look on apodc site it states that u.k applicants may be exempt from Stage 2 of the exams if they have trained at an approved university, have all their certificates, have current registration and have a work and personal reference...I have all of this so am hoping I will be exempt. It would be a nightmare to have to go and do another exam as from reading all the exam criteria it would be exactly the same as what I have done at Uni within the past year! Financially to pay for the assessment and go over to Oz just to do that would be difficult too.

Where are you based? I had interviews in mackay, Brisbane and Cairns and got offered work in melbourne, Coffs Harbour, Hervey Bay and a few other places too. We got a good feel for Cairns..I think you can read all the experiences of people on here but I think you have to go somewhere yourselves to get a feel for a place. I could never emigrate without having been there first...

You don't need to do the exam anymore. The rules changed in 2005, s long as you graduated with a good degree from a recognised school of podiatry in the UK and have references etc you are ok. The information is all on the Australian Pod council website.

Basically, have skills assessed, this doesn't take long.
Wait for certificate to come back, send of information to registration board.
At the same time, have your medicals for immigration (the doctors send these straight off, don't wait for request from immigration, police checks - do these asap, takes forever. When everything is back to you, send off to immigration and wait!!!

Our process took 6months, I came out in 2006, 9 months after I had graduated. We hadn't been to where we are currently living, but very lucky as we love it.
