Discussions on the use of toe spacers/spreaders seem to be very popular on the internet just now, but what does their use achieve?

Many claim using them can improve foot function but what of the foot strengthening effect that is attributed by some to their use. Is there any evidence that using toe spreaders can strengthen the intrinsic foot muscles ?

I can't find any research that shows using toe spacers strengthens the foot!

Ok , after looking further, I found a research paper that shows using toe spacers in bed at night can strengthen the hallux . Interesting .
