    This article is a good historical review.
    Systematic Review of the Role of Footwear Constructions in Running
    Biomechanics: Implications for Running-Related Injury and Performance

    Unfortunately they did not include maximalism (exoskeletal) based footwear systems which is the direction for our future footwear.
