Eliminate Orthotic Break-in

    MASS Posture orthotics are quite aggressive in their postural correction. A major problem has been break-in. Formerly I recommended varying degrees of hand holding: like adding one more hour each day etc. etc.

    I have recently been studying a technique that relaxes muscles and makes break in instantaneous in most cases. I thought I would share what I've observed.

    Walking is a repetitive learned sequence of muscle firings that occur without much thought. Your nervous system is constantly making subtle changes in response to terrain, proprioceptive feedback, emotion and intention (among other influences).
    For example, in a falling arch the person may fire muscles in an attempt to elevate the arch between heel contact and mid-stance. The most effective muscles would be the intrinsics that span the plantar longitudinal arch, for example the Abductor Hallucis. With the introduction of the orthotic, firing such a muscle in the usual sequence causes a concentration of force (a hot spot) during gait making break in uncomfortable and difficult.

    Ligaments contain the sensors to give live feedback, regarding balance, muscle contraction, body positions and postures. This is especially important in a bipedal animal where balance is more critical. These sensors can initiate pain (through cytokine release), and limit range of motion in any area that that has experienced excessive strain or trauma.
    Fortunately they also act like RESET buttons. We are presenting you with a simple, easy technique where a gentle force is applied in ONE direction perpendicular to the fibers of 15 ligaments that are especially effective at erasing the pattern of muscle firing during walking. This allows a NEW corrected, (I recommend, MASS Posture) pattern to be easily accepted with no resistance and then re-recorded during the first few steps. Essentially, there is NO Break-in period. From then on they should “live" in a corrected (MASS ) posture to reduce plantar ligament stress and prevent recurrence.
    There are two side effects that you are likely to observe: 1. The foot becomes more flexible immediately afterward. 2. Most pain dissipates. Relief lasts usually until the next pain initiating event. In the case of a fracture it would be moving the fragments. In plantar fasciitis, it is standing up and stretching the fasciae again (although immediate improvement is noted). In disease processes, the mechanism the disease uses to initiate pain is still at work and must be addressed; in other words don’t mask the pain and fail to address the etiology. In a pinched nerve relief lasts until the next pinch.

    I present this NOT as a treatment or therapy but as a relaxation technique that makes people relax and not fight the postural changes that orthotics should provide. I highly recommend that it be done just prior to the patient’s first step in the corrected posture. It is fun to watch their amazement.

    All 15 foot relaxation points can be done in less than 5 minutes with a little experience. "The Foot” video volume is presented at www.rrrtv.net website for FREE. Have your whole staff watch and practice this technique to mastery.
    The applications are broad. For example, try it post-trauma or surgery to reduce pain regardless of duration, especially around implants or other hardware or to relieve the posterior heel rim pain that may persist after biomechanical treatment has worked for plantar fasciitis. You may have patients that are not wearing their orthotics due to break-in discomfort. Now they too can enjoy the benefits of walking in a more corrected foot posture. Once again, the orthotic applies the corrective force to encourage the foot to function around a better posture and the Relax Release Relief allows the foot to accept the postural correction effortlessly. A match made in heaven.
    We hope that this is as successful in your hands as it has been in ours.

    My anecdotal observation only:
    Several people with localized foot CRPS have reported long term remission with only one session using the foot points described.
