Uni dumps pensioners

THIS will be the last year the public can be treated at a discount rate by podiatry students at the University of Western Sydney's clinic.

From next year the course will not run at UWS because the university has not received enough federal funding to cover its cost.

The university's osteopathy course will also end when its final students graduate.

Camden resident David Grungy said pensioners who could not afford private clinics will be left in the lurch without the university clinic's services.

"It is just a tragedy, an absolute tragedy," Mr Grungy said.

Phil Spenser, another pensioner who relies on the clinic, said: "I see the osteopath twice a week and it costs me $15 per appointment.

"A private practice would cost $60 an appointment.

"I can't afford that on a pension."

Professor Gregory Kolt, UWS's head of biomedicine and health sciences, said that without the training, students could not provide the services to the public.

"The core business of any university has to be the education of its students," he said.

Mr Spenser blamed the previous Howard government for underfunding UWS and the university itself for placing all resources into the new Macarthur campus medical school.

"They are closing down courses left, right and centre to cater for this medical business," he said.

When the final UWS podiatry course ends this year the discipline will no longer be taught in Sydney.

I am a Camdenite that chose to relocate to Melbourne to study Podiatry after the demise of the UWS course. Phil Spenser lived on my grandmother's street and taught me the art of lawn bowls.
