How did the newspaper get hold of the Xrays? These are the property of the NHS, or is the paper lying too?

If she's 23 years old and had "her foot broken in 4 places" I doubt She'll be wearing High Heels for very long!

But this smacks of BS to me. Even if somebody were to be so breathtakingly stupid (and I suppose one should always bet on that) she would then have to convince the surgeon that she was in sufficient pain to warrent surgery at 23. The Xrays would be an objective measure for the level of pathology. And even then we're talking not just a "simple" bunion op but a pretty radical proceeduce (I see a screw i the 5th met and it says 4 places)? That would have to be a very confident surgeon indeed. And this is just the right foot, that would have to be a pretty huge asymmetry.

And 2 inch screws?! Through the 5th met head? Really?

This does not look like a high quality piece of journalism to me. I suspect it to be something of a stretching of the truth.

Even at 23 this is pretty serious surgery, do you think she will get offered the left now Mr.Liggins?? Do you operate on patients this young or is it very rare?

    Regards

I expect nothing less from the 'News of the World'.

Average reading age of 9 years old. More a comic than a newspaper.

    All,
If this is true then I am really mad.
I have elderly patients on NHS waiting lists for hip/knee replacements that are essentail to maintain what little quality of life they have and then we see that some vain floosie has been given a basically cosmetic procedure becsuse they told porky-pies.

    What else can I say?

Ah yes, the daily mail. Bastion of journalistic integrity.

Gosh. Screws stapled to bones. I'd always sort of imagined that the screws would be screwed into the bone rather than stapled to the side of it. But I'm no surgeon so I will willingly defer to one of my learned colleagues.

Amazing how the surgery also cured her oedema! And look how the second toe is wider at the end before the surgery and straight and even after it. Remarkable.

Hello FF. Very rare, but each case is individually assessed. My general policy is to suggest/offer conservative treatment unless significant pain is experienced or unless it can be predicted with certainty eg. worsening hammer toe. I would not imagine that degenerative joint disease would be very advanced in this case (certainly not if the Xray is that of the patient), so I would not have chosen to treat her surgically. Unfortunately, even Xrays and MRIs do not always tell the whole story, so one is reliant to some extent on patient evaluation of the degree of pain. It is then all too easy to carry out surgery which is, strictly speaking, unnecessary. One also has to remember that big brother HPC is watching, and a malicious complaint will, seemingly, be pursued with glee.

    PS
Yes Rob, I have never yet found it appropriate to staple a screw - I imagine that it would be necessary to drill two holes in it! I also note that the surgery seems to have cured her onychauxis. I wonder if the surgeon charged extra!

PPS Have a look at the 'new' length of the 1st met compared to the 2nd. If she didn't have degenerative disease before, she certainly will in the future. Oh well, all grist to someone's practice!

  15. Re: You guys must see this!! Typical England youth today !!

Yeah, I thought the big toe looked a bit exuberant.

If the surgery cured oedema and onychauxis then perhaps you SHOULD be stapling screws to the bones Bill! Could be an exciting new technique. I sort of pictured it with the staples they use to tack phone lines to the wall, either side of the screw.

Nope, definitely have to drill two holes through the screw and then put the staple through the holes, to offer stability (which the technique illustrated needs anyway!

Dont worry before ten years is up she will be suing the NHS as she has been told she shouldnt have had it done so young.

So not her fault and she needs her tits redone so needs more money.

    LOL :dizzy: Its probable.

My serious question is why is she so stupid as to go to a newspaper about any of this if even one sentence is true it may negate her from accessing future surgery when she actually needs it.

Simon be fair maybe a 7/10?? Legs look nice

  20. Re: You guys must see this!! Typical England youth today !!

The vapid expression and breathtaking stupidity move her into the <3 range for me I'm afraid.

She's probably been well paid for her story though!!

She wants the other done, surely this story will prevent her from getting it for free. Plus the crap pre/post op photos, I suspect this is fabricated.
