They should say that there was less force output at the measured location. The muscles could be producing the same amount of force at the attachment of the muscle but, if in the chronic ankle instability people that force had a smaller lever arm, you would see less force output at the measurement site. If an equally strong muscle had a smaller lever arm, the muscle with the smaller lever arm would produce a smaller moment. A handheld dynamometer would measure a force applied by the foot to the dynamometer. The dynamometer would be applying a moment to the joint. So technically the dynamometer is measuring the joint moment generated by the muscle and not the force generated by the muscle. The results agree with the idea that STJ axis location can effect the leverage of muscles about the STJ.

    On the LaTrobe website, http://semrc.blogs.latrobe.edu.au/foot-orthoses-biomechanics-date-june-jade-dans-top-3/
in their review they claim, "... those with CAI have an altered foot position (increased inversion and decreased dorsiflexion of the ankle) during certain phases of running gait. This foot position appears to be adopted post ankle sprain, as it was not apparent in the control group."
I have not read the Method section of the article but can this claim, that because it was not present in the control group it must be post ... sprain ..." be valid?
