    Hi,

Can anyone give me some advice on purchasing an internet domain? There appear to be so many companies that I can purchase from that I am a little concerned that I will get it wrong.

Any pointers will be really appreciated.

I use GoDaddy (world largest registrar) and Crazy Domains (cheap; based in Australia; always efficient and quick support)

Well there are 2 distinctly different opinions! :)
When I was enquiring I came up with the same opinions all the time.
Some do the cheapest, others do the biggest and others it does not matter!?!
    Good Luck with your choice...

    Cheers

    Heather

I probably should have clarified my reasoning for disliking GoDaddy:

    1. They are very "spammy". The constantly try to upsell you on other products.
    2. Their admin interface is really hard to use.
    3. They supported SOPA (a government initiative to stop online piracy but at the cost of freedom of speech and is generally a very questionable initiative)
    4. Their CEO has been involved in less than ideal behaviour that has led organizations like PETA (People for ethical treatment of animals) to ask people to avoid using GoDaddy... link here https://secure.peta.org/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=3643&c=ptwit

It's not that their service is unreliable or they are costly, if they are your only deciding factors then there is no reason to avoid them.

Hi Aussie Dreamer, My deductive reasoning leads me to believe you are most likely to be Working in Australia. If so I recommend MelbourneIT
    https://www.melbourneit.com.au/
not the cheapest but not outrageously expensive and great for aftermarket service/trouble shooting. Remember NO website trumps a dud website any day.

Wasn't there something with GoDaddy just last month, where all their servers got hacked? I remember hearing something about it...they were specifically targeted.

We use Webcity and they've been really good...we've got 3 websites with them...they're cheap but reliable and have good tech support.
