I have a patient in the Midwest who cannot find a shoe to fit because her foot is very long and narrow. We have tried the O&P labs that have access to more unusual sizes and they have been unable to fit her. She says she is willing to fly wherever she needs to (North America) to get the job done well. Does anyone have a person or place they swear by? Thanks!

Hi Judith. I'm writing from the UK but I have two ideas that you might like to follow up. The first is the professional body of pedorthists http://www.pedorthics.org/search/custom.asp?id=133

A pedorthist is a orthotist who has specialised in making and adapting footwear. If they make footwear, they usually make on a modified cast of the foot. Effective but not always the most pleasing to the eye.

The other route you might take is the Honourable Cordwainer's Company which is based in Virginia. They would have a list of many types of shoemakers, some of whom will be able to do made-to-measure. http://www.thehcc.org/ Let us know you get on with either of these.

Hi Judith, In the United States the following companies make custom "orthopedic" shoes:
Trumold, American Shoe, Jerry Miller and Brainard. If you are looking for a custom non orthopedic shoe you certainly can try Otabo (several US branches). There some companies in Europe (Italy, Germany) that make custom shoes (both orthopedic and fashion). If you need any more specifics feel free to contact me.

Judith I have had good luck with this company and they are fair costwise:

    http://www.apisfootwear.com/

She can be casted and fit locally by any provider with an APIS account. BTW, I've fit some very difficult feet with APIS' shoes, this wicked hallux varus being one.

There is a company in the UK who might distribute in N. America who can reduce their standard lasts to suit. This helps to keep the cosmesis(on the whole) OK whilst being able to fit some very non standard feet.

Klaveness http://www.klaveness.no/ - here are some examples of the type of footwear they produce - and the closing is fantastic - a great finished product

PS - I have no financial interest in this company

    Hi Judith,

You may want to have a look at this company here, www.lydia-shoes.com All shoes are hand-made and patients could be involve in the manufacturing process by choosing the color or combination of colors their leather shoes want to be, as well as the design, in order to increase patient compliance/concordance. The shoes of course are based on patient's foot dimensions, foot condition and medical history (eg. ulceration, amputation, accident) so a comprise between the patient and the shoemaker, has to be achieved in order to reach the optimum result redarging aesthetic appearance and orthopaedic structure of the shoes. Increase depth for fitting foot orthotics, increase forefoot width etc are also available. Am a Podiatrist and am working closely with them so if you decide to go for them and you need some more assistance, please feel free to contact me as well. I hope this helps!
