As part of the Certificate IV Allied Health Assistant Course, RMIT (CBD) has introduced a podiatry skill-set elective in the past year. Traditionally, this course (AHA) is aimed for public health assistance, but the podiatry component, I think is more targeted toward private practice assistance.

Unlike the old training package, the new training package does not insist upon sterilisation being included in the podiatry specialisation elective group of 3. Common-sense has directed us to add the sterilisation unit over and above the 3 specialisation units.

If your podiatry practice (Melbourne Metro > Regional) is keen to test/assess/utilise one of our students, let me know on the email below, or leave a voice message on 03 99254319. They will work around the clinic requirements, and will be prepared for evening or weekend help; even if it is just sterilisation to begin with.

As most of you are aware, podiatry assistants should not be given high-risk feet, nor are they officially trained to use a scalpel. Nontheless, I have given some advanced students a dummy-run at using the scalpel on my feet. They are clear though, that their scope of practice does not include scalpel use and dealing with the HRF.

For those podiatrists with a training and assessment qualification (TAEIV), also let me know if you are interested in delivering and/or assessing part or whole of the program.

    Regards,
