    Hi Everyone

I'm planning on returning to the UK, after being in Australia for 6years. Can anyone tell me what the Podiatry work market is currently like? I've heard mixed veiw points, no work, lots of work.
I have experience in all aspects of podiatry in Private practice, NHS, Australian Health department.
    I would be returning Jul/Aug 2013.

    Any information, greatly appreciated
    ;)

I've been a full time locum for 4/5 years and have worked in different parts of the country. I have tried to pick up jobs in the Manchester area to no avail, it appears to be swamped with pods due to the 2 schools (Salford - biggest in Europe and Huddersfield - which is not too far away).

The farther away from a training Uni the better chance of a job in MHO.

Good luck - Why the return? if it's not a personal question.

    GS

Hi podgs. I am considering doing some locum work around the country (I live next door to a training uni), and I just wondered how you go about seeking continuity. Do you use the same agency who can set you up with successive jobs, or do you have periods of down time? Also, I was wondering about work in London, which at first glance seems plentiful, but of course accommodation costs will likely be a barrier. Have you worked in London? Can you recommend an agency perhaps? Many thanks.

    Hi Claire72
There is the odd down time, usually slack for a week or so after the end of the financial year (5th April) and the odd time it's taken up to a week to sort out a new contract but on the whole I've managed to work as much as I've wanted to.

I have been lucky enough to find work through just 1 agency (Labmed) and never had a problem. However there is a bit of work involved in signing up with Agencies so if I had my time again I would sign up with about 3 from the very beginning for more options.

I have only been offered work twice in London and have heard from other locums that it tends to be a day here / 3 days there rather than a 3/6 month contract, but that is second hand info.

If I'm away from home I take a job with hospital accommodation - the price varies according to standard not post code.

Main thing is be prepared to be very flexible, every where has different ways of working, different computer systems, different work focus and different personalities. Don't let it daunt you.

If you want any further info just contact me - good luck

    Hi podgs
Sorry for the late reply but thank you for your advice. I had never considered hospital accomm, which will be of a huge benefit. Thanks again.

i have been working in london for the past 9 months and had solid work. i have found the more flexible you come across the more opportunities arise. mostly they offer you a 4 week contract and it gets extended as the trusts dont particularly know whats happening with budgets till the last minute. its nerve wracking but usually turns out for th best. accomodation wise you may have to travel further to work if you want cheaper accom but if youve been living in australia im sure the commute wont be much longer than your used to! i agree Labmed are the best i have come across too.good luck!
