I recommended twice daily povidone-iodine application for mild onychocryptosis following spicule removal in a breastfeeding mother. The mother bought the Betadine liquid and read on the box it should not be used whlist pregant or breastfeeding. The mother was not happy that I recommended it.

There seems to be varying advice on safety of topical Betadine. There are definite contraindications for mucous membrane applications.

Does anyone have any comments on the safety of minimal topical povidone-iodine use in pregnancy/bf. or safer alternatives?
