Diabetes foot care related videos were identified in YouTube to assess their usefulness as a source of information. Two physician reviewers evaluated the videos and categorized those as very-useful(11.2%), moderately-useful(14.6%), somewhat-useful(24.7%) and not-useful(49.4%). YouTube videos on diabetes foot-care contained a variety of content ranging from very useful to not useful.

Analysis of YouTube as a Source of Information for Diabetic Foot Care.

Background: Increasing amounts of diabetes-focused content is being posted to YouTube with little regulation as to the quality of the content. Diabetic education has been shown to reduce the risk of ulceration and amputation. YouTube is a frequently visited site for instructional and demonstrational videos posted by individuals, advertisers, companies, and health-care organizations. We sought to evaluate the usefulness of diabetic foot care video information on YouTube.

Methods: YouTube was queried using the keyword phrase diabetic foot care. Original videos in English, with audio, less than 10 min long within the first 100 video results were evaluated. Two reviewers classified each video as useful or nonuseful/misleading. A 14-point usefulness criteria checklist was used to further categorize videos as most useful, somewhat useful, or nonuseful/misleading. Video sources were categorized by user type, and additional video metrics were collected.

Results: Of 87 included videos, 56 (64.4%), were classified as useful and 31 (35.6%) as nonuseful/misleading. A significant difference in the mean length of useful videos vs nonuseful/misleading videos was observed (3.33 versus 1.73 min; P < .0001). There was no significant difference in terms of popularity metrics (likes, views, subscriptions, etc) between useful and nonuseful/misleading videos.

Conclusions: This study demonstrates that although most diabetic foot care videos on YouTube are useful, many are still nonuseful/misleading. More concerning is the lack of difference in popularity between useful and nonuseful videos. Podiatric physicians should alert patients to possibly misleading information and offer a curated list of videos.

Our aim in this study is to analyze the content and quality of the videos about hallux valgus on YouTube®. The first 50 videos published by typing 'hallux valgus' in the search engine on the YouTube site were analysed. The number of views of all videos, likes, dislikes, who uploaded the video, video duration, content, watch rate, and how many days it was uploaded were analysed and recorded. All videos were analysed with JAMA, DISCERN, GQS, and VPI scores. Six of the videos (12%) were from academic sources, 14 (28%) from commercial product vendors, 13 (26%) by medical animation organizers, 8 (16%) by physicians, 4 (8%) by physiotherapists, 2 (4%) by physical training trainers, 1 (2%) by patients and lastly 2 (4%) by trainers. The JAMA mean score of the videos was recorded as 2 (1-4), GQS 3.02 (2-5), DISCERN score 37.56 (26-68), and Video Power Index 41.35 (0-470).
The quality of YouTube® videos about hallux valgus is low. The content and quality of health-related information obtained through the Internet are of increasing importance for both healthcare professionals and patients.

YouTube as a Source of Patient Information for Ankle Arthroplasty: Quantitative Analysis of Video Reliability, Quality, and Content

Background. There are limited data on the quality and content of videos discussing total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) on the YouTube video platform. Methods. The first 60 unique YouTube videos resulting from the keyword query "ankle arthroplasty" and "ankle replacement" were analyzed for comprehensiveness and quality. Content was assessed using the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmark criteria, DISCERN, Global Quality Scale (GQS), and an arthroplasty-specific score. Results. Videos demonstrated low mean DISCERN (49.2/80), GQS (3.2/5), and arthroplasty-specific scores (4.3/12) with substantial variability between videos. Most of the content was produced by nonacademic physicians (46.7%) and academic sources (21.7%). Academic videos saw significantly higher mean JAMA scores (P = .013) but were otherwise comparable to non-academic physicians. Commercial content demonstrated significantly low-quality scores compared to academic (P = .012) and physician (P = .008) sources despite the highest mean viewership. Conclusions. Information on TAA on the YouTube platform is highly variable based on video source, with generally poor quality and content.
