Hi,

This is my first post so I hope this is in the right place. I have enjoyed reading the various threads throughout this great website.

I have just graduated with a first class honours degree in podiatry and I am considering enrolling in the Theory of Podiatric Surgery MSc at Huddersfield University. I have been working in a private practice over the summer dealing primarily with routine care and biomechanics, and I have also observed some foot and ankle surgeries in a hospital setting. I am fairly certain that this is the line of work I want to go into.

My question is, are there any residency programs out there when the MSc is finished/after I gain more experience? I realise that it will not be easy in any sense to get on a residency program but I am willing to work very hard. The reason I ask is because I have searched all over the internet for any sort of information on a residency program in Podiatric Surgery in the UK but I have been unable to find any. The only article I came across was an old one on this website where there was a voluntary residency position available, but that was years ago.

I would appreciate any information any you may have, and any experiences of others who have gone into this line of work/have completed the Theory of Podiatric Surgery MSc.

I'm amazed that some newly-qualified Pods still find they have no clear training pathway in the UK.
I'm not a Pod Surgeon so can't advise you about Pod Surgery residencies.
I can advise you on your career though.

To begin with, good for you on obtaining a First, and welcome to the profession and to the forum.

I think you are wise to consider the Theory of Pod Surgery MSc. It will give you a good breadth of knowledge of the subject, and open a few doors too.
Assuming you are a member of a professional body - have you asked them about your next move? The SCP has a faculty of Pod Surgery and they should be able to give you some answers. The BCPA may or may not, the Institute probably not.
