    Hi Heather,

Do you mean AAPSM? I'm a member of SMA but not AAPSM, and from what I am aware of, both organisations are responsible for organising conferences and developing policies with regard to sports podiatry (& medicine/physio/sports trainers etc with SMA).

Here in Queensland, our state sports podiatry group (SPQ) is very active with continuing education activities. We meet every second month for a presentation from an invited speaker from the podiatry/medicine/radiology/physiotherapy/etc professions. Examples of topics we covered last year include; "Running vs walking gait biomechanics", "Review of Topographical Foot and Ankle Anatomy", "Sports specific orthotic therapy" and "Musculoskeletal medicine as an additional treatment modaility to Podiatry". We also have an Annual sports Shoe update where respresentatives from each of the major footwear companies (Asics/Mizuno/New Balance/adidas/The Athlete's Foot/speciality running shoe stores) give us a run down of what's happened in the past 12 months technology-wise, and also show us the new range for their brand.

We also provide Injury Coverage at major events such as Brisbane marathon and Bridge to Brisbane, which gives our members a chance to gain experience with acute sporting injuries (particularly our new and recent grads).

SPQ is affiliated with the APodA Qld, so maybe it's worth enquiring if you have a similar special interest group in your state? :drinks

    Regards

    Donna ;)

The AAPSM is the podiatry body affiliated with SMA. In Queensland the QSPG (Queensland Sports Podiatry Group) is the active body involved in sports Podiatry. As Donna said we organise regular meetings, sports coverage and a biennial conference (THIS MARCH). The QSPG however is affiliated with the APODC rather than the SMA. There is a looser connection between the QSPG and the SMA and the AAPSM but no direct affiliation.

While the AAPSM does organise some sports podiatry conferences it tries to do it mostly through SMA. In fact you now register with AAPSM through the SMA.

The AAPSM has not been particularly active in comparison to the QSPG in Queensland. That may be the case also in Victoria. You may need to contact the sports Podiatry group in the Victorian APODC if there is one.

As with many professional memberships they are difficult to justify financially. What you get out of them can largely be a reflection of what you are willing to put in at conferences etc. The main benefit is to promote that you are a member of the organisations for your own credibility to patients and referrers. Difficult to put a value on that.

If you do not feel like you are getting value for your money my suggestion would to be to complain in writing to the respective bodies and keep complaining until you get a response. That can be more effective and better for the profession then simply not registering again the next year.

Hi Heather - I agree !! I feel that I am parting out $$ with VERY little return with regard to the AAPSM. The QLD group seem to have their act together................maybe we should move?
