A warning about HICAPS terminals, practice management software and Windows 8.

Just found out the hard way that HICAPS terminals will only run on windows 8, or Windows 8.1 PRO.

I did my home work, but the vendors did not mentioned version numbers when I asked.
So I did an online upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 on our reception touch screen PC.....oops

Microsoft is withdrawing support for Windows XP in the new year. So if you are planning an upgrade of your system be very careful.

Also check that your printers will run with whatever computer/operating system you decide upon, the drivers for your printer may not be available

HICAPS still won't admit that their terminal does not work on the non PRO version of Windows 8.1
I understand that HICAPS have done no work upgrading their software, it only works with Windows 8.1 PRO just thru good luck.

    Just an update folks.
Did the upgrade from windows 8.1 to windows 8.1PRO. It went well.
However HICAPs still did not work.
Called their Help desk they could not help me. She arranged for someone in technical support to call me back Friday morning at 8:30 am (my day off)
    The call never happened.
Called their help desk again at 10:30 Friday.
The response when I quoted the reference number and that I was to get a phone call at 8:30. The call center operator should never have promised me a time and person I was speaking to inferrered that it was all my fault.

She had no knowledge of windows 8.1 PRO or even what I was talking about.
Transferred me to their technical support who also knew nothing about Windows 8.1 PRO after some try this try that conversation he said that he would get Windows 8.1 Pro running on a machine and call me back. I dont expect that I will ever hear from him again.

So I waited till after hours and deleted all operating files that related to HICAPs, including the drivers. I then did new down loads from the HICAPs website and reinstalled them.
The HICAPs terminal is now talking to the Reception desk PC. However my receptionist tells me that she had to restart the machine again when she tried to use it.
I suspect that the HICAPs software is unstable running on any version of Windows 8 as we have had trouble with all of them.

The good news is, another bank is providing a practice managment enabled terminal from the end of January 2014 and that it has well written code and is stable in its operation and works with Windows 8.1 PRO

Our HICAPs terminal has just dropped out again as I write this.
Dont know who this other bank is, but I am going to find out.

    Hi Trevor,

HICAPS is a wholly owned subsidiary of NAB so it's unlikely there will be another bank with HICAPS.

As it's a profession wide issue, I asked HICAPS earlier this week to investigate and come back to me which they've agreed to do. I'm expecting they will get back to me this week.

Some banks still advertise Healthpoint as a product. Its coverage of health funds is pretty good.

My old friends at TYRO were working on health claiming and while the project had gone quiet for a while, I'm hearing unconfirmed rumors that they could be close to release. I plan on giving them a call when I have a spare moment.

    Cheers,
    Damian.
