    Hi all,
I'm currently studying at Cardiff Met, final year Podiatry.

I know it's a (relatively) long way off, but am due to graduate in June with a 2:1 and am interested in the 457 route with a view to PR, and have been for some time.

I'll be 34 by then, male (last time I checked) no kids or commitments. Interest in all areas of Podiatry, particularly MSK therapies. I spent 12 months in Aus. back in 2012-13 in Darwin, Perth and Adelaide.

Just wondering how long process takes, costs etc.

    Many thanks

    Hi

I am on a 457 and have been in a rural hospital now for almost 2 years now.
It can be tricky getting an employer who will sponsor you, I was however looking specifically at Victoria as my now husband lives here. I travel 3 hours to Melbourne each weekend to see him and just waiting on my partner visa : )
Travelling in Australia is however quite normal and the roads are less busy and easy to drive on in the rural areas, as well as petrol being much cheaper : )
If you are looking at Victoria, then the hospitals are very good - I was nervous after working one year in the NHS and was expecting poor facilities. My position at NHS was shocking, asbestos, no nail drill that worked, paint peeking off the ceilings and high volume of patients. Here it is very new, and I have all that I need.
Horsham hospital (East Wimmera) are often looking for people and I have heard they are very good with supportive structure for new grads, Stawell is another option as well as Ararat. Ballarat may consider a 457 they are closer to Melbourne and The other side of Melbourne 3 hours a way - Bairnsdale - Lakes Entrance are meant to be good too. Also Swan hill is another option.
If you work privately in Australia you will see high volumes of patients upto 20 a day which is way too many, in England it was 12-13 a day and that was more than enough. I would say a hospital or community centre would be your best bet : )
It did take me a long while to find a willing sponsor but my options were limited and I was reluctant at first to work rurally, however each month you get an ADO (aditional day off) on top of your annual leave which allows you to travel for the weekend : )
Took 2 months to get my 457 visa and my contribution was just under a thousand dollars from memory.

  3. Many thanks for the info podofpenzance! Interesting re volume of patients privately, and agreed on it being too much! Did you contact the hospital directly?

    Hi
    That's okay.
That';s a good point! I actually went through a recruitment agency, Cornerstone - they were very good at putting me forward for the job. You can also apply to hospitals and ask if they are looking for someone, I did everything to get a reply, but applying to job adverts might be best. Also before you apply you need ANZPAC to accredit your qualification http://www.anzpac.org.au/
Australia can be more lengthy with recruitment so its good to start looking now.

  5. Right, yeah I spent 12 months there a few years back on a working visa, I often hark back to the roads there UK traffic is insane now, as is the pressure on the NHS as no doubt you've been informed!

  6. Right thanks! I spent 12 months in Aus. in 2012 - 2013 and often hark back to the lovely (relatively) traffic free roads and petrol price!

One another thing if you don't mind, is there scope for private general practice there? Whats the situation with FHP's, I was under the impression they don't exist? Also, do the Aus. equivalent of the NHS provide good enough care that Private isn't in demand?

I appreciate you have to work for someone for 24 months before you can apply for PR first....

Oh and all the best with the partner visa!

    Many thanks!

    Good Morning,
I work for Australia leading aged care podiatry company.
We are offering sponsorship to candidates in more rural areas such as Toowoomba and Adelaide.
We pride ourselves on a strong work-life balance with the majority of our podiatrists only working 5.5-6 hours per day.
If you are interested in hearing more, please send your CV and resume to jgoater@dimplecare.com
I look forward to hearing back from you.

    Hi

I'm a UK trained Pod who emigrated to Oz a few years back. 457 Visas are a long way from being your best option (the Australian Government is about to scrap them & replace the system in fact). There are State Based Migration options where you are essentially sponsored by the state & are then not tied to 1 employer. Generally these visas come with PR straight away and are processed quickly. A few years back at least, Podiatrists are eligible even as new Grads :)

    Look up subclass 190.

Feel free to PM me for link & all the best in getting to the Sunshine, the paperwork is worth it!
