There are certificate III and IV courses offered by TAFE and similar colleges in most Australian states that now have modules for podiatry. These courses are approved by the Community Services & Health Industry Skills Council.

I found this one in QLD

With the growth we continue to experience in therapeutic shoe care, we are now investigating our options to maintain efficiency. While the present growth does not appear to be enough to substantiate having another C Ped on staff, ABC's new Therapeutic Shoe Fitter certification appears to make sense for us. The training investment and roles of the practitioner makes it very suitable for a Podiatry Assistant.

We'll let you know more, as we further explore this route.

You wouldn't find it too hard to get into Podiatry courses at uni. Take the STAT if you are over 23. It is not difficult. I got into all schools of podiatry with STAT. But no schools of Dental Hygiene.

    Hi Egar,

In the UK ( the following links may help).

    Acces to higher education:
    http://www.accesstohe.ac.uk/

Also some universities offer a foundation course which may enable you to persue a career in podiatry through this route (I believe it is a 4 year course full time).

Here are afew links to try:

    Hope this is helpful.

    Best regards,

    Mandy

OK. I wanted to be a dental hygienist.
I took the STAT the special Tertiary admissions test for mature students.
It cost I think $90.oo. In Sydney there are preparation courses for it.
I got 99.8% I am not the brainiest person. This is an easy test, designed to show you can make your way in the English language.
I applied 132 times to get into dental hygiene, and didn't get in....I applied to 6 courses of podiatry in Australia,...Latrobe, Charles Stuart, Queensland, one in WA and the new course at Uni of Newcastle....I got into all of them.
I took the Uni of Newcastle course. More than two/thirds of the class are 'mature'. Lots are ex nurses and ambos, but the vaguest connection to podiatry gets you in....a pedicurist, a plastics worker who made orthotics for his friends, I did have a diploma in leathergoods production, but had never worked for a podiatrist. Had made a few pairs of shoes.....
I don't have HSC or equivilent.
Get hold of the Qtec, Vtec and other uni admissions guides.
    I like this course.
I would like to help you all I can. Paul Tinley on this forum gave me courage.

Contact QTAC - Queensland tertiary admissions centre. I applied last year. There were two courses in Qld - one in Brisbane, the other in FNQ - James Cook Uni I think.
    Good luck,
    Kara

There is only one Podiatry course in Qld, being at QUT.

The Australian Podiatry Council lists all of the current schools of podiatry in Australia.

So, what did you do? I have skilled myself a bit more while doing the pod course by taking the cert II in nail technology, manicure and pedicure. Now, I can call myself a medical pedicurist. I do neater nails now. It was 3 evenings or 2 days a week for $219 plus tools and supplies, another $200 or so.

Halfway thru the Newcastle (NSW Australia) degree. LOL. The white ants ate my house, I failed heaps and I had to take a semester off to growl at builders, so I took the manicure and pedicure course. Really good. Of course now back in uni, I can't do the useful, 'pampering' treatment I learnt at TAFE.

Personally, I am of the belief that a pedicure qualification is of little to no value if one wishes to work as a podiatrist. If, however, one wishes to work in the beauty therapy field, I am quite sure they are invaluable skills.

I am not trying to deny the need to carry out nail care to the same high standard as any intervention, I just feel that a pedicurist is not a podiatrist by the longest stretch of the imagination. Hence the need for a medical professional to be educated as such; and to behave as one.

I should add that I have no problem at all with podiatry assistants, and value highly their role in providing appropriate care (including maintaining cross infection and decontamination standards).

There is more to admissions requirements than working in a vaguely foot-related field, I am quite sure.
