Does anyone know of peer-reviewed, published research on the harmful/detrimental effects of barefoot activity (walking, standing, running or any other exercise/activity)? Thank you.

  2. Michael:

To my knowledge there are no peer-reviewed, published research articles on the potential detrimental effects of barefoot activity. However there are a few good articles comparing barefoot running to barefoot walking. Michael Warburton's article from a few year's back may be a good start for you.

Also, I not aware of any peer reviewed published research that even shows that barefoot running is better than shod running, nor any that shows barefoot running is even ideal (this has been discussed a number of times over recent yrs at the ISB footwear biomech conferences).

Thanks for the info, Craig. I am not looking for evidence of benefit, but research that shows HARM as a result of barefoot activity.

I did realise that, I just wanted to point out the lack of evidence for the benefits! (despite the claims by the fanatics to the opposite!- I made my views clear in this thread - I recently came across a thread in a runners forum devoted totally to my views! I was flattered, as all they were doing was proving exactly what I said was right!!)

    Craig,

Any chance of a link to that thread on runners against barefoot running?

Happy new year to one and all!!

Sorry, I looked for it but could not find it again. It was on a runners forum and there a few zillion runners forums. It was not about runners against barefoot runners. It was some of the irrational fanatics criticising comments I wrote about how irrational and fanactical some barefoot runners were. What was funny about the discussion was the irrationality and fanaticism about barefoot running in the discussion....which just proved what I said was right .... but they just did not get it! ... maybe I need to type slower...

One of them even tried to suggest that what I said had to be wrong because of a typo in my writing!!! (everyone here knows about my spelling track record).

They were reacting to some of the comments of the type that I made in this thread:

    Hi guys,

If anyone has access to 3d equipment and would do a few runs, I could tell you exactly how a person's gait changes going from shoes to barefoot. In a lot more relevant detail than is available by any current methods.

This could be done using a treadmill or the floor.
