My son is 8 & a big boy - almost 150cm & tipping 50kg's. He has just worn out a good pair of ASICS runners in just under 5 months, size 7. The main issue has been the excessive lateral heel wear & general lateral collapse of the upper which I believe has caused some lateral ankle soreness. He has a moderately deviated STJ axis & has been wearing a pair of orthoses to reduce the excessive STJ moments.

Can anyone recommend a sneaker that perhaps offers a more durable sole or other features to support his foot better. The sole of a cross trainer would be more durable than a running shoe wouldn't it? Any other suggestions. I'm then also questioning my orthosis prescription but I want to buy him a new pair of sneakers tomorrow.

    Thanks.

  2. I´ve always said ASICS sole wears out too fast. So maybe it´s a change of brand as well of a change in shoe type. Cross trainers maybe harder wearing and also a hard heel cup will be important to look for as well.

Also while you decide on your orthosis prescription why not try a lateral EVA wedge.

    Hope that helps

Does he use his foot as a break when he uses his scooter? bicycle? Does he use his shoe to whack his little brother? That might be causing the lateral collapse. Seriously, what activities cause the shoe wear? I remember wearing out a pair of shoes in about 2 weeks when I was 11. We live on a moderately steep street and all my friends built carts that didn't have breaks and the only way to control the speed was to put your foot on the ground.

Maybe a Van's skateboard shoe. The ones with a solid rubber sole. That should slow down the wear. 5 months, that sounds like normal wear for an active child.

Depending where you are, Bata under the brand name "North Star" produced a product called "Cross", very durable, l was told they stopped producing it due to the fact it didnt wear down fast enough, l can believe that, you may find some old stock around near you, failing that if your not too far from me l have some left

If you are looking for durability you are going to have to look at something with a bit of weight to it, sadly weight does often equal durability.

Your local shoe repair guy might even repair the sole with a more durable compound say a 4mm rubber rug

Thanks everyone for your thoughts/suggestions. We ended up getting him a pair of Ascents' from Athletes Foot - appear to have a very durable sole & good heel counter. They also offer a 6 month warranty on excessive sole wear which we thought was good to see.
