hi all,

just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on these pics...brief history...

53 year old lady
been seeing me for tx of VP's and advice on onychomycosis tx
has arythmia and hypothyroidism..takes thryroxine but no other meds
usually wears trainers or crocs
very active lady does alot of running around with grand kids and dogs

recent (last appt) noted nails...took pics (sorry for quality) to see what thoughts you guys have. i thought probably micro trauma??

love to hear your thoughts.

sorry...forgot to say it was the white lines down either side of nails not the bit at the distal end of the nail.

Hi Poppet,

Are her thyroid levels within normal range? These transverse lines do not look particularly trauma induced, more like onycholysis (with perhaps early stage clubbing) which can be associated with thyroid problems. Skin and nails often thicken with hypothyroidism, due to mucin deposition in subcutaneous tissue.

i did know about the association of onycholysis and thickening of nails with hypothyroidism but didnt know about the mucin deposition so have looked at that...thanks for the learning oppertunity!

i dont know how recently she has had a check and will certainly suggest this is a good starting point. thanks Bel.

ha ha! i should get someone to double check my spelling on these things as i have been picked up on that on another thread! unfortunatley i am dyslapstick...ok its dyslexic...probably spelt that wrong too...oh the burden

saw the lady today and she is due for a thyroid check next month and on mentioning the possible link, she did say she didnt feel quite herself...i will let you know the outcome! thanks again
