Fungal Nail Treatment with Vicks Vapor Rub

Hi all,

I've been hearing and reading a few things about using Vicks Vapor Rub as a treatment for fungal nails. Apparently some of the ingredients have anti-fugnal properties. Has anyone heard the same or used it successfully? Wondering whether to offer it as an alternative option to patients?

Be very careful. In the event of an HCPC complaint/hearing, you would be judged against best practise/the gold standard.

With a diabetic, you definitely WOULD be judged against the gold standard.

Hi Carl,

As my colleague points out, best we stick to evidence based treatments. There are no clinical trials to show that Vicks is either efficacious or without side effects. We discussed it briefly in these threads;

No worries. Great stuff for rubbing on chests.

True. I am very fond of my Bambach, but....

 

Anecdote: Several years ago, my Brother-in-law (without consulting me in any way ) used Vic's vapour rub and his chronically infected nails cleared up beautifully! Unfortunately, at the same time he took to drinking a small thimble full of olive oil every day (because he'd heard that would also work), so we will never know which did the trick! Or even if it was something else altogether!

 

Looks like its good for nose but not for toes.

 

An elderly patient of mine decided to try this on her own nails. I was surprised, as I had never hear of it, but her nails have improved, with a faint demarcation line, so perhaps there is something in it.

I have had some of my patients( who refused any sorts of medication) try this with absolutely no beneficial effect. The same goes for Listerine and possibly Tea tree oil. If the infection is mild and as much of the fungal nail is removed as possible, then Dactarin applied twice a day MIGHT help.
