Inter-lab Variation of orthoses

    Hi Guys,
    I was wondering if there are any studies out there that compare standard orthoses between Labs. Ie does a standard 4 degrees poly root device from one lab have the same kinematic results when compared to another 4 degree poly root device from a different lab when all other factors are equal ( namely the negative cast or scan, footwear and subject)
    I seem to see a huge difference in labs when clinically comparing devices and was wondering if this translates to a measurable biomechanical difference.

  2. Now that would be a good study....showing the difference in shapes and mechanical characteristics of orthoses (i.e. arch deformation stiffness, frontal plane rotational stiffness) made off the same foot and ordered exactly the same way from one foot orthosis lab to another!!
     
  3. It would be would'nt it!

    Even just examining the morphological differences of the post "correction" Casts would be a start! I don't know, but I'd bet at least £2.49 that the amount / nature of the cast corrections varies a good deal!

    Be a pricey study though ;-)

  4. add to the study whether the cast cerforming was done by left or right handed person, when compairing left and right device from the same lab.

  5. This is a study I've wanted to see for many, many years.

    The use of a scanned foot would remove any variability in the cast that the labs are working from. This does however, limit the study to CAD /CAM enabled labs. You then need to analyse the variation in the finished devices. I seem to recall Kevin and I discussed this in another thread.
