doesnt it strike you as odd that the vast majority of people in the migrant camps are all young men not old people women or families. they have come through 15 free safe countries and have not claimed asylum when legally they should. 17 million people have just voted and one thing they dont want is economic migrants from africa. They were safe the minute they crossed thier own border . what is the attraction to the uk free housing schooling healthcare living expenses. plus if we let in all the poor unacompanied children they can suddenly find thier families by mobile phone and they can all follow. most of these young men need to return home and make a difference to thier own communities .flooding britain with illegal immigrants is not the answer if we admit every resident from the jungle into the uk tommorow another million people will be encouraged to do the same. I dont know the answer to this massive problem but just letting people decide which country
they want to live in and travel there illegaly is not right.

  4. So you think that people should remain where they are born and not try and seek a better, safer life? Do you think that our government might just be slightly culpable for the conditions in African and Middle East countries that are in a state of collapse through exploitation and ruthless dictatorships that we imposed? The majority of travelling refugees are young men and women. Do you think many elderly individuals are able to walk three or four thousand miles? They are desperate people and the guys behind the Calais Foot Project are fantastic examples of how we deal with this.

I ask the question why have they walked thousands of miles what you are telling me is they want a better life so are economic migrants. I would like to live in the usa but guess what mark they wont let me and if i go on holiday and overstay my visa they will deport me and never let me back in . just because you want it does not mean you should have it or are entitled to it.

A difficult situation. However, most, if not all, did not 'walk three or four thousand miles', they paid people smugglers to get them into France or other safe countries. France is a safe haven, so why do the 'illegal aliens' - as our cousins across the pond would say - continually break further laws by hi-jacking the vehicles of honest people trying to make a living in order to get to the UK? The historical content is largely irrelevant - are we to claim recompense from Italy (fat chance) because Celts and Saxons were captured and subject to slavery? As Shakespeare said
"This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands"
It behoves those have have the fortune to live here and enjoy its rights and privileges to maintain them against illegal incursions. Does that mean that I'm some sort of racist? No, I'm all in favour of limited immigration, roughly following the Aussie model ie. we should welcome those with the skills and contributions which will enhance our country.
Having said that, I applaud those individuals taking part in the Foot Project initiative, as long as it is delivered in France, or the other countries through which these illegal immigrants have passed.

Fishpod, why did you feel the need to chip in with a post like that?

  9. It also behoves those who have the fortune to live and enjoy its rights and privileges to respect other sovereign nations and their borders and not advance an illegal war and occupation against their peoples. That principal substantially reduces the problem with refugees.

why flaco because they should not be there they should all have claimed asylum in the 1st eu country they landed in . They should not be commiting illegal acts in northern france. They have been offered asylum and have refused it. so they will get little sympathy from me.

I hope that I have always respected other sovereign nations and their borders and have never advanced illegal wars and occupation against their peoples; I also hope that I am a person of principle, although, alas, a principal of nothing. I wish that the illegal immigrants at Calais and elsewhere would also respect sovereign nations and their borders and follow international law by claiming asylum (if that is what they intend to do) at the first safe haven.

Yes, but given that I've already determined that I DO want to give them some assistance then anything outside that is surely irrelevant. You kicked off the replies with a patronising and unsolicited post but rather than politely butting out you're still venting your spleen on political issues, with views, quite frankly, that repulse me. With all due respect, YOU do not have right to tell ME what I should or shouldn't be thinking of doing with my own time and resources. I'm not a child, I can think for myself, thank you. If I and a few other pods decide to do the odd bit of pro bono work in the Jungle, I doubt the sky will fall in or unleash the fury of hell's demons onto the shores of our sceptered isle. You don't need to lose any sleep over it.

See post 6# last sentence. I will patronise you unless you read, analyse and consider the posts of other people - that is why you are considered a child. I wish you well in your (if it is your) project.

Fish, I don't want to get into an extended argument with you, but I think you're going to have to accept that Brexit still looms large and, roughly speaking, our nation is split right down the middle on it. However, your views are not necessarily representative of other Leavers, as mine are not of other Remainers. I don't agree with anything you have said, and I'm sure hell would freeze over before you came over to my way of thinking, so we're going to have to agree to disagree.

PS - I am a Corbynista, can I interest you in buying a raffle ticket for the forthcoming Labour conference?

Oh dear these poor people, who have passed through half of Europe (where they could have applied for asylum) but didn't becuase they aren't "refugees" just economic migrants.

Instead they choose to stay in the "jungle" and try to get to UK illegally by harassing lorry drivers who are trying to make an honest living.

Absolutely, Cat, bit like the homeless or unemployed in the UK who could have opted to get a free education, career, roof over their heads and a Mini with go faster stripes but instead chose handouts, booze, drugs, Sky TV, open air living and random street violence but they made a reasoned lifestyle choice instead. Woof.

Apples & pears, apples & pears.

The people you refer to are legal citizens of the UK.

They are not trying to illegally enter UK to get handouts.

This all shows how we have enough dossers and Jeremy Kyle stars that are homegrown, without importing any from Calais and the like.

No, Cat, a bit of a misunderstanding I think. My point is that our own native problem is every bit as worthy of attention as elsewhere. They're not all 'dossers' or Kyle combatants, and most don't choose to be such either. Why would I be bothered about what passport they hold anyway, what's that got to do with anything? And before you say anything, yes, I do voluntary work here as well. By the way, nobody is 'importing' any unauthorised migrants just because they are thinking of doing a bit voluntary work in Calais.

    Flaco10004,

    I don't get your point.

My point is that pandering to the "Jungle" inhabitants only encourages more to come.

My husband works in transport and is sick of all the publicity given to these "refugees" whilst British (and other) lorry drivers are subjected to daily harassment from these individuals.

    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world...-deadly-ambushes-hurl-bricks-at-lorry-drivers

    https://www.rt.com/news/354467-migrant-chainsaw-attack-calais/

These people are economic migrants who are indulging in criminal behaviour and costing British businesses millions in the form of spoiled loads and damaged lorries. The only "treatment" they need is a deportation order.

hi Flaco probably agree with your assessment .but you are absolutely wrong on brexit we had a vote and you lost . accept it its real. when labour won with tony blair we did not get a tory govt we accepted defeat. Its called DEMOCRACY. I will join the labour party for 25 quid and personally vote for jezza. he is the biggest guarantee that the conservatives will win the next 2 elections. jezza is just like micheal foot a legend

Do you also think that we shouldn't have soup kitchens and food banks here because it only encourages people to be lazy? Quoting The Express and Russia Today to me is a bit like me asking you to read Das Kaspital, you might as well throw in quotes from the Daily Mail and the UKIP manifesto.

I know that people have concerns and fear around what is going on at the moment and you're quite right to highlight some of those issues, but I wish we could all start talking about this sensibly. Do you honestly believe that all the individuals in Calais are as you describe them? Have you been there personally and gone into the camp or have you just decided that the ones who make your husband's life difficult are representative of all of them? How about any genuine refugees fleeing war zones flooding into southern Europe, are they all jihadists? All of them? Just because some lorry drivers drive above the speed limit, go on restricted roads or litter the verges with bottles of urine they throw out of the window on the move, does that mean I should tar all of them with the same brush? Of course not, because I imagine that annoys your husband as much as it annoys me.

All I did was respond to a post because I wanted to do some voluntary work in Calais and the next thing I know I've got people queuing up to have a pop and unleash some anger in my direction, telling me what I shouldn't be doing. Beyond bizarre.
