I received an email invitation today to speak at a foot surgery conference in China next May. I am probably not the only one. It originates from what appears to be a scam centre aiming at academics and others. The website is impressive with many well known confirmed speakers. I have emailed one of them to ask if their participation is genuine. There are many blogs about conferences which never take place and which have collected fees.
In case you too have been flattered by a kind invitation just pause and check before passing on your card details. This is the first foot related attempt I have been able to trace but will probably not be the last.

    Predatory conference

Predatory conferences or predatory meetings are meetings set up to appear as legitimate scientific conferences but which are exploitative as they do not provide proper editorial control over presentations, and advertising can include claims of involvement of prominent academics who are, in fact, uninvolved.[1][2] They are an expansion of the predatory publishing business model, which involves the creation of academic publications built around an exploitative business model that generally involves charging publication fees to authors without providing the editorial and publishing services associated with legitimate journals.[1][2]
