Risk factors for ankle sprains

    I'm not sure that STJ axis will be predictive. There is the sinus tarsi syndrome, peroneal inhibition, group of people that will also have lateral instability and ankle sprains. Many of these people may have medially positioned STJ axes. I fall into that group. In Kevin's anterior axial x ray study, in which I was a subject, I was an outlier with a medial position of the STJ axis and I have had numerous ankle sprains. You can also have a medially positioned STJ axis that is sort of anterior so that there is a significant portion of the heel is medial to the axis. When the heel is medial to the axis, uneven terrain can cause the unexpected shift in location of ground reaction force so that the STJ will supinate and a sprain can occur. (Most of my sprains occurred in landing from jumps. So, people with medially positioned axes can still sprain their ankle. Although, there are some feet where the axis passes through the most medial aspect of the heel and I would bet these people never sprain their ankle.

    Conversely, folks with a laterally positioned STJ axis can have some very highly tuned reflexes and may have never sprained their ankle. My bet is on a weak correlation between laterally positioned STJ axis ankle sprain.
