Certainly worth a mention jb. Having trekked Kokoda some years back I can assure regulars on this site that the Track is the ultimate test of one's physical, mental and emotional capabilities. How our fathers past managed to fight a war there is almost unthinkable. For the obvious physical limitations Kurt exhibits, he is an inspiration.

FYI whilst on the Track (during 2004) I met a young boy in the village of Alola who had recently returned from Australia after receiving clubfoot surgery. I've always wondered how his feet would recover and develop on such rough terrain. Has anyone, on the off chance, bumped into this boy in recent years?

Whilst on the theme of hope and inspiration, the story of the Bangladesh twins and their marathon surgery this week in Melbourne has been simply incredible. Indeed there are many inspiration stories associated with their carer Moira Kelly and her Children First Foundation. These include an assortment of children from developing countries receiving much needed complex and life changing foot and lower limb surgery. A handful of these stories can be found on their website: http://www.childrenfirstfoundation.com

Though I admire this person very much, I don't think the word HERO is fitting.

I mean no disrespect, however, A Hero (in my humble opinion) is someone who puts himself in harms way in order to help another without regard to his own safety.

CERTAINLY I would not put any sports figures in this category either.
