Hi Folks, I'm not very good at this stuff sp please be patient with me. Im in my 1st yr as a pod student and keep getting bombarded with all sorts. not sure which prof body to use sco. or inst I did ask on another forum but was disappointed with some of the rude comments, i was even accused of being on an ego trip or wind up. can you tell me who you would join and why, at the moment the inst is coming out on top for me they are so helpful and not intimidateing as i've sometimes felt the others are. thanks annie

 

Hi Annie sorry to hear that you were treated so poorly. Sounds disgraceful?!? Hang in there we have many colleagues who will be thre for you!
I am not sure where you are from so it makes answering your question a bit difficult?
Try reposting in your countries forum! Good luck with being mentored and your studies.

Thanks Heather I'm in the uk and am just getting used to doing forum stuff. Have now found a really good crowd with The Institute of Chiropodists and Podiatrists.

I have read your exact same comments on other sites. I dont believe anyone has been rude to you (certainly not from what I have read) or unhelpful or unfriendly.

You appear to make sweeping comments about the SCP and its members, whilst at the same time saying the Institute members are less intimidating and more friendly? Each time you ask which group you should join - whilst clearly favouring the Institute already - so why ask again and again?

I cannot speak about the Institute because I dont know anything about them - but I certainly wouldn't disparage their members or base my opinion of the whole group on just a few members' behaviour towards me. I don't believe that is a professional way to behave and rather short-sighted - as you will come across these people when/if you qualify.

If you really are a 1st year pod, I think you should realise that putting others down en masse on a public forum is counter-productive - as this forum is an excellent resource for both SCP and Institute members alike (and indeed SMAE also).

I have found everyone on here very happy to help if you ask in the right way and don't assume you know it all! As a new grad myself Im only too well aware of what I don't know and eager to learn from everyone. If you want to be taken seriously you should accept that you won't like everyone you meet but you have an awful lot to learn before you graduate and many of those you will learn from will belong to the SCP!

Do you want to join a professional organisation or a social club?

There is more to an organisation than socialising with other members.

What sort of package do you want ? Indemnity insurance, CPD, conference, branches, a recognised Trade Union (invaluable if you want to work in the NHS) free legal advice, etc etc. etc.

IMO you need to check out what each organisation will give you for your m/ship- fees and then make a decision.

BTW, when you are a student all "real" pods will seem intimidating ! That will change when you qualify and become more confident.

The Institute provided me with a well grounded foundation to build my career upon, when they taught Chiropody courses prior to the argumentation of the Health Professions Order. They also supported me in my progression to undertake the full-time BSc (Hons) during which I was impressed with the quality of CPD provided by the SCP.... So, I have a `fondness` for both ICOP & SCP, but recognise the limitations and strengths of both professional bodies. Both will provide the same level of group indemnity insurance, etc. Up to you at the end of the day.
