    Hi everyone,

My name is Matt and I have my first of three podiatry interviews this week at Southampton University. Can anyone let me know what to expect? Is there anything I need to specifically prepare for?

I am a mature student (25) and already have completed my first degree in Sport and Exercise Science.

    Many thanks.

I had an interview there years ago didnt go there but not the point. They mainly want to know why you have applied for it. Basically show what your interest is as you done the sports science Im going to assume (Correct if wrong) that you have an interest in biomechanics talk about what you learnt in the sports science and say that you want to expand your knowledge further and be able to treat complex cases in the furture.

Really talk about your interest in podiatry also remember to ask at the end specfic questions about the coarse like the lengh of specific modules and what you do on placements. Again asking them questions like this shows them you have an interest in the course and they give you more info about what to expect if you decide to take up a place.

Overall it is a relaxed interview show your interests to them and remember to ask them questions as well. Best of luck.

    Hi Matt
Just show what you know and hopefully you will get it.
I had an interview yesterday for Brighton

    Good luck

  4. 1. Turn up.

    2. Show enthusiasm

    3. Do not faint, flip, come naked, wear a gorilla costume, defecate on the desk, mark your territory in the feline sense, violently attack the interviewer or bring an enraged pet swan on a lead. They're always disruptive. A pet duck, however, is cute and endearing and will certainly get you a place if you bring it along.*

Seriously? They want to see you're keen. Beyond that its all trimmings. Best way to show keen is to do some research (as you're doing now). If you know who is interviewing you do a google scholar search and see if they've published anything. Play to that. They'll know of course, but it shows you took time and effort, can do research and are enthusiastic.

    Have fun

    Robert

    *probably not on reflection.

Southampton is a great place to study.

I attended as a rather more `mature` student (debatable) at 33 and was told that I was awarded a place due to my enthusiasm shown at the interview. So, I agree with Robert, your attitude during the interview will speak volumes. Far more than any knowledge base you already posses.

    Good luck!

    Cheers,
    Bel

  7.

I sort of gaped. Then laughed, then sort of cried a bit, then gaped some more. Now I honestly don't know if that was the best video I've ever seen or If I need a course of severe ECT for the mental trauma.

I was going to make a crack about matt doing the lovely lady lumps dance but my heart would'nt be in it now! Robin has just owned this thread.

Ten bucks and a frizby. Thats just... odd! I Have to get that as a ringtone.

Um. Yeah Matt, do that. I'd be impressed!!

    Robert

PS, Bel, you reckon you could do an amateur transplants type lyrical version of my lumps my lumps with a dermatology take? "my lumps, my lumps, my itchy scaly bumps"

I`m all over it. Like, um, a rash?

PS. I would like to add that my lumps, bumps or anything like that had nothing to do with me being offered a place at Soton.....although I hear that Mike Potter does take 2 with his coffee;)

  9. 2 lady lumps with his coffee! What a guy.

I tried my very best with Janet McInnes but my lady lumps were just not up to standard. She can be a hard woman to impress.

Flee, Matt, flee to a sane profession while you still can!

    Hi Matt,

I've had to do 2 uni interviews for podiatry when I was studying as after my 1st yr I took a gap yr to live abroad then decided to transfer to a different uni for personal reasons for the final 2 yrs.

What I felt they were looking for was: enthusiasm for podiatry, why that uni, what modules/specialisms you are interested in and what you hope to do once qualified (to be sure you're going to stick it out, or that might of just been me with transferring! haha). Oh and if you have volunteered your own time to observe a podiatrist, I always think that shows you have actually seen how the job can work and it was what you expected.

I hope my experiences will help!

Good luck, I'm sure you'll do fine!

    Hi Matt,

Just do all of the above. Dont sweat they pritty much let anyone into the Podiatry profession - as long as you show a flare for helping people ect. Academicall the course is not challenging i really wanted to do medicine but could never get in so did Podiatry - you will find alot of other people have chosen Podiatry becausing of failling to get into other course or because they chose to retrain. Whilst podiatry was not my original chosen profession it has given me good opportunities. Good luck BTW I went to Southampton its a good uni - some of the lectures can be up of themselves - but guess thats academia for you.

Hi Matt, Just turn up on time, act interested and ask a few questions like Hours doing practical work, Where you can go for work placements etc.

Not having a job at the end of it would be a good one.

If you want to work in the NHS that is.

If you have a look on NHS Jobs there seem to 4 Podiatrist posts in the entire UK. There is also a general shift toward downgrading the job to band 5. Do you really think the level of studying is worth it for a salary that tops out, after several years, at 27odd grand?

You have to be careful with what you say on a public forum, (I'm not ANON if you notice) but the NHS is a bit stuffed at the moment. If I were retraining again I wouldn't do this and I feel sorry for the students graduating this year. It's going to be a tough time for everyone.

It seems that my initial post was off topic and of a negative nature. I apologise if I have offended other users in this process - this was not intended.
