New Zealand has wrapped up the Tri Nations series with a 34-27 victory over a fast-finishing Qantas Wallabies at Auckland's Eden Park on Saturday afternoon.
In a match that exemplified the often outstanding contests that have marked the relationship between the two teams in the past 25 years, Australia took the battle right to the All Blacks as they tried to stay in the hunt for Tri Nations glory.
The Wallabies led 20-11 at halftime but in a thrilling final quarter the Kiwis got out to a 31-20 lead before Australia struck back with a second try for wing Lote Tuqiri nine minutes from time. It was converted by centre Stirling Mortlock and pulled Australia back within four points.
Australia seized the initiative 25 minutes into the game when a floated pass from Collins intended for right wing Doug Howlett was intercepted by Tuqiri, who raced 50 metres with only an injured Carl Hayman standing, ineffectually, in his way.
Hayman was forced to leave the field to be replaced by Greg Somerville.
However, the All Blacks fought back and from their first driving maul at the line, it was lock Jason Eaton who leapt over the maul to convince the television match official that he had scored.
Moments later, just before halftime, a solid Australian attack produced a try when flanker Rocky Elsom was ruled to have grounded the ball over the line before losing it.
It took several looks by the TMO before the decision was made.
Carter landed two penalty goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to get New Zealand back to 20-17.
With 20 minutes to go the All Blacks found its driving rhythm and launched a strong assault at the Australian line after MacDonald ran well and created an opening on the left flank.
But in pushing toward the line, replacement halfback Piri Weepu lost the ball as he went for the line.
However, a failed touch clearance 63 minutes into the half by replacement wing Mark Gerrard was fielded on the sideline by replacement lock Ali Williams.
He powered his way to set up a maul and the ball was spun quickly with wing Joe Rokocoko providing real thrust before the final two passes outside found Muliaina and lock Chris Jack who raced over to score.
Carter added the conversion as New Zealand took the lead for the first time in the game.
Four minutes later a thumping tackle by Carter on his opposite Stephen Larkham saw the ball bounce to inside centre Luke McAlister who raced 45 metres to score the match winner.
New Zealand's lineout proved much more effective and the value of its rotation policy was evident with the loss of inside centre Aaron Mauger before the game, and Hayman during the match.

....then how come there is only one player up in from of the judiciary and he is Australian and the only professional foul in the game that resulted in a sin bin was also an Australian .. could they have brought this defeat on themselves?

And what about the awarding of that dodgey try to Australia. An Australian newspaper even described that as

Elsom, just before half-time, appeared to drop the ball over the line. Both teams assumed that they would have to set a scrum because Elsom had bounced the ball. Everyone thought that, except Roos who believed Elsom had scored the try. This was the ultimate reprieve for the Wallabies.

good point, BUT OVERALL IN EVERY POSITION IT WAS OBVIOUS AUSTRALIA WERE SUPERIOR, ............ apart that is from woodcock and probably replacement somerville ................ granted mealamu was a few grades above paul .............. and got to admit jack, eaton and williams finished over the top .............. on second thoughts So'oialo and collins dominated ............. and if you pushed me, kelleher matched gregan.............obviously carter is the worlds most valuable player ..........Rokocoko was electric (drew 2 outside men superbly for the Jack try................McAlister and Mulia'ina were excellent and the brute strength of Masoe and class!! of MacDonald were a glory to behold ........................................BUT BOY DID WAUGH HAVE A TOP GAME

Can someone please explain to me why Peter Hewat can NOT get a game with the wallabies? Not ONE game even though he has broken super 12 and 14 records. Please someone with a reasonable explanation. It is one thing that has bugged me for a long time. Must be a political thing or something he has said. I come from an Aussie rules state but you do not have to be Einstein to see a discrepancy here. I even googled his name to make sure he is Australian an eligible to play. Come on rugby minded people, tell me why.

New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark has ignited a trans-Tasman war of words by accusing the Wallabies of "several acts of assault" on All Blacks captain Richie McCaw in Saturday's Test.

Clark, who was among a crowd of 47,000 as New Zealand clinched the Tri Nations with a 34-27 win in Auckland, said she was "horrified" at Lote Tuqiri's spear tackle on McCaw.

Tuqiri was slapped with a 10-week suspension for the 52nd-minute tackle - unpunished by the onfield referee - which dumped McCaw onto his head and neck but caused no injury.

"One hesitates as just someone in the stand to voice an opinion, but certainly I felt someone should have been sent off," Clark told New Zealand radio station NewstalkZB.

"I thought it was absolutely appalling. We witnessed several acts of assault against the All Blacks captain and it was very, very ugly to see."

The Australians produced a more confrontational performance at Eden Park, flanker Phil Waugh setting the tone by striking McCaw in the jaw in the 12th minute.

Fellow backrower Rocky Elsom then took McCaw out of a ruck soon afterwards as the Wallabies tried to upset the rhythm of the brilliant ball scavenger.

Wallabies coach John Connolly, nicknamed Knuckles, struggled to contain his laughter at Clark's accusations.

"I think we were the ones with the bumps and bruises and the stitches," he said on Monday.

"She has to be kidding, this is a wind-up, this is a wind-up."

He responded to complaints about Tuqiri's tackle, for which the speedster will only miss one Test, with concerns about his own players.

"I suppose I think we were horrified when we thought our guy might have been tipped upside down in the line out ... this is a wind up, surely she has her tongue in her cheek," he said.

Tuqiri will miss the concluding Tri Nations match against the Springboks on September 9 in Johannesburg following two New Zealand-South Africa matches in the coming fortnight.

NZPA reports Clark made no comment last year when former All Blacks skipper Tana Umaga and current hooker Keven Mealamu were accused of a spear tackle on Brian O'Driscoll in the opening Test of the series against the British and Irish Lions.

O'Driscoll suffered a dislocated shoulder and took no further part in the tour.

Clark is not the first Kiwi PM to get involved in the intense trans-Tasman sporting rivalry.

In 1981 Robert Muldoon accused Australia's cricket team of cowardice and said yellow was an ideal colour for their uniforms after the infamous "underarm incident", which soured relations between the two nations.

Just heard Matt Rogers cannot play last game of tri-nayions because of knee injury. So do you think that man Peter Hewat would get his chance ooh no! He has obviously done something wrong we do not know about. They have replaced Rogers with Scott Staniforth from Western Force. What is going on?
