Ian North is pretty knowledgable in these matters and I dare say will chip in to the conversation. Technically there is no diffference between AFL and soccer boots and much would come down to preference. By chance the cleats were developed initially for AFL and trialed in soccer here in West Australia. The football players liked the boots and Asics, then others including adidas started to market them to football players.

In Oz ground conditions do play an important role with much of AFL played on hard dry surfaces and the qua;ity of the pitch is not always green and lush. As I found to my cost playing soccer my UK soccer boots (with studs) were not as comfortable.

The design of cleats came from the Aussie Rules discipline and their desire to reduce injuries to players. Analysis of patterns of injuries indicated knee injuries caused by jumping and landing were preventable by using semi compressible cleats (not traditional studs) in circular patterns.
