BACKGROUND:
Myositis ossificans is a benign, tumor-like lesion characterized by heterotopic ossification of soft tissue that usually affects the elbow and thigh. At different stages of maturity, it show similar histologic appearances with sarcomatous lesions or maturing bone. Misdiagnosis can result in unnecessary radical treatment.
CASE REPORT:
A 50-year-old woman with dorsal forefoot soft tissue mass was diagnosed as myositis ossificans after surgical excision and confirmed by a histopathological examination.
DISCUSSION:
To our knowledge, myositis ossificans occurrence in the foot is rare and only a few cases have been reported in the literature.
SUMMARY:
Increasing awareness on the unusual sites for myositis ossificans occurrence is necessary for differentiating this lesion from a malignant soft- tissue tumors and avoiding diagnostic pitfalls and unnecessary investigations, which can have major consequences and complications for patients.

A 37-year-old woman with myositis ossificans of the left foot is reported. A faint density was seen on foot radiographs, whereas computed tomography images showed a rim of mineralization inferior to the second and third metatarsal bones. On short tau inversion recovery-weighted magnetic resonance images, a hyperintense lesion was demonstrated with hyperintensity extending to the surrounding soft tissues. The rim of ossification appeared hypointense. Other non-neoplastic soft tissue processes with bone formation such as pseudomalignant osseous tumor of son tissues, florid reactive periostitis, and bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation occur more commonly in the foot than myositis ossificans. A differential diagnosis of these lesions including periosteal and parosteal osteosarcoma, periosteal chondroma, and osteomyelitis is discussed.

Myositis ossificans in the diabetic foot: a review of the literature with an illustrative case series.

OBJECTIVE:
Myositis ossificans is a rare non-neoplastic form of heterotopic ossification most commonly described after trauma or surgery, in the diabetic foot.

DESIGN:
We provide a review of the literature including three illustrative cases.

PARTICIPANTS:
Individuals presenting to the foot clinic.

SETTING:
Single centre, tertiary multidisciplinary specialist diabetes foot clinic.

RESULTS:
We review the literature surrounding Myositis ossificans, and describe three cases of Myositis ossificans following foot surgery in people with diabetes. All of the imaging was consistent with the descriptions of Myositis ossificans reported elsewhere in large muscle groups. These are the first reports of Myositis ossificans occurring in the feet of people with diabetes.

CONCLUSIONS:
Myositis ossificans has only very rarely been described in the foot and, as far as we are aware, never in people with diabetes. Given that the prevalence of diabetes is increasing, and the foot problems requiring surgery are also rising, we suggest that clinicians should be more aware of this condition because it may occur more frequently.
