    So might the results of this paper suggest that changes in the volume and composition of the intrinsic muscles will lead to the same orthotic device producing varying results on the same foot over a period of time ?

    For example it has been shown that a medial arch support can lead to an increase in the volume of Abductor Hallucis . Perhaps this would lead to a greater volume of muscle between the orthotic device and the bones of the medial longitudinal arch and so alter the overall action of the orthotic over time .

    I realize that the volume change in this example would be small but examples can be found were intrinsic muscle volume and composition variation with time are far more marked .
