I am a 32 year old final year podiatry student, due to graduate in Summer 2013. I am interested in working in Australia, with a view to permanently immigrating but I'm not really sure where to start.
My interests lie in general podiatry - I scored very highly in prescription meds and foundation medicine and love being in clinic, I hope one day to gain a masters in rheumatology. I have no objection to working in biomechanics though.
I understand I need to have my skills validated by the Australasian Podiatry Council but that's about the limit of my knowledge so far!
Is it possible for newly qualified pods to move to Australia or will I need to accrue some work experience in the UK first?
Are there any specific barriers to immigrating that I should know about?
I have a husband and two young children who would come with me so I would need to be 100% secure in employment and a residence before moving.

Any advice or tips from people who have been through this would be excellent.

    Many thanks

    Hi

I have recently been sponsored to come to Australia so I think I can possibly answer your questions for you.

Once you have graduated you will firstly need to get your skills assessed by ANZPAC which costs around $350 dollars. For this you will need to get all the transcripts for your course from the Uni which may or not charge you, mine didn't. You will also need to be registered with the HCPC as you will have to provide a certificate of good standing from them.

Once the skills assessment has been completed you are then eligible to register with AHPRA. AHPRA will not register you as a full member until you actually get into OZ but all the same you will need to have a letter "in principal' from them for your visa.

During all these processes you would have hopefully found a company to sponsor you for a 457 visa. Once AHPRA has been completed your sponsor can nominate you and you can apply for a 457 visa. The whole process costs roughly £1500 approx and can take 3-4 months sometimes more if you are awaiting paperwork form HCPC etc. Your family can be added onto your visa by your sponsor and this allows your husband to work legally in Oz.

Once you are in Oz you will have to present all your documentation to AHPRA who will then grant you full membership.

After two years experience you can apply for permanent residency. The whole process is very frustrating but worth it......

In answer to your question regarding experience......Yes you can come here as a new grad you just need to supply a CV outlining your experience which will be your clinical placements....

Hope this helps. If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to email me on mandmiah@yahoo.co.uk

Good luck with your final year....

    Hi
Medacs Healthcare has a number of vacancies in Australia currently in the private sector. We are also an approved sponsor of Podiatrists for 457 visas and have a number of current visa vacancies that we are looking to fill over the coming months. We can offer a full free service to international Podiatrists that can obtain AHPRA registration. This includes the sponsorship of a working visa for you, your spouse / de facto and children. Weekly payroll, full insurance for work injury and professional indemnity, full paid holidays 4 weeks a year in accordance with Australian legislation, paid public holidays, pension scheme payments + more and a range of salary options across base salary and commission payments depending on the location and practice setting. For a confidential discussion please dont hesitate to email us at alliedhealth@medacs.com.au or call 61 2 4967 2060.

Good luck in your journey. I have completed my ANZPAC and have just had all my documents certified for AHPRA. I am hoping to get a sponsor too and have a partner and young baby. I registered with global source recruitment, they are good at answering all questions and can also find you jobs to suit you. I am 7 years post grad this year in both private and NHS but most jobs advertised say experience necessary and I have seen some that say new grads welcome, I'm on here every week and there are lots of jobs being advertised so just keep an eye out

FYI - Prescription meds are a different kettle of fish over here.
Also found Pods seem to do more total contact casting (unlike in UK where we referred to the plaster technicians for this).
So you will find you be learning slightly new techniques and management plans, but it's not hard to pick up and adapt.

I moved 4.5 yrs ago and passed my citizenship 2 weeks ago. Emigrating was best decision I made. :D

Good luck with the move :drinks

  9. Hi Everyone,

I just thought I would mention that our business, HealthStrong, is happy to consider sponsorship overseas trained podiatrists who are already AHPRA registered or who are in the process of gaining registration.

We are actually looking for a Podiatrist to start immediately in Brisbane. This can be either on a short term contract - up to 6 months (which would be suitable for someone on a 457 Visa) or a permanent role for those who are looking to be sponsored.

As we are a highly dynamic national business we do have some openings in areas other than Brisbane so for more information please visit the careers section of our website or contact me directly.

You will be speaking directly to us, the employer (not an agency).

I look forward to hearing from suitable applicants!
