Plantar Fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It affects millions of people annually. It involves inflammation of the plantar fascia—the thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel bone to your toes. While various treatment methods exist, a simple, often overlooked, and highly effective tool in a conservative treatment plan is the felt arch pad.

These humble arch pads offer several significant advantages, particularly for those beginning treatment or seeking a non-invasive, cost-effective solution.
    1. Superior Pain Relief Through Targeted Support

The primary goal of any Plantar Fasciitis treatment is to reduce strain on the inflamed plantar fascia. Felt arch pads excel at this by providing direct, targeted support to the medial longitudinal arch of the foot.
    • Mechanical Offloading: By gently elevating and supporting the arch, the pad immediately reduces the tensile stress on the plantar fascia attachment point at the heel. This action, known as “offloading,” can provide quick relief from the sharp, stabbing pain often experienced, especially with the first steps in the morning.
    • Correcting Biomechanics: Many cases of Plantar Fasciitis are linked to excessive pronation (the inward rolling of the foot).4 The firm yet compliant support of a felt pad helps to stabilize the foot during weight-bearing, limiting over-pronation and promoting a more neutral foot alignment.
    2. Customization and Conformity

Unlike rigid, pre-fabricated orthotics, felt arch pads offer a level of adaptability that is invaluable during the initial phases of treatment.
    • Tailored to the Patient: Felt pads can be easily trimmed and shaped by a healthcare professional (like a physical therapist or podiatrist) to precisely fit the contour of the patient’s specific arch and foot size. This allows for a personalized level of support that addresses the unique pathology of the individual’s foot.
    • Variable Density and Thickness: Felt comes in different densities and thicknesses. A practitioner can select a softer, thinner pad for mild cases or a denser, thicker pad for severe pain and greater support requirements, making the treatment highly adaptable as the condition improves. The most common thickness to treat plantar fasciitis is our 1/4″ (6mm) felt.
    • Easy to Position: They are secured with adhesive, allowing for precise placement under the area of maximum arch collapse or strain, maximizing the pad’s therapeutic effect.
    • Apply to either the foot arch or inside the shoe. Incorporate the arch cushion into a tape straping. Or apply the arch cushion under the shoe’s insole or onto an existing orthotic.
    3. Cost-Effectiveness and Accessibility

When compared to custom-made orthotic devices, the advantages of felt arch pads are clear from an economic and accessibility standpoint.
    • Affordable Solution: Felt arch pads are significantly less expensive than custom orthotics, making them an accessible initial treatment option for virtually everyone.
    • Low-Commitment Trial: They serve as an excellent diagnostic and therapeutic tool. A practitioner can use a felt pad to temporarily gauge how a patient’s foot responds to arch support. If the pain is significantly reduced, it confirms the benefit of arch support and provides a foundation for considering more permanent, long-term devices.
    • Immediate Availability: They can be applied right in the clinic during the first appointment, providing the patient with immediate relief and encouraging compliance with the rest of the treatment plan.
    4. Integration into a Comprehensive Treatment Plan

Felt arch pads are rarely used as a standalone treatment. Their real strength lies in their ability to enhance and integrate with other conservative therapies.
Combined TherapyBenefit of Arch Pad Integration
Stretching & ExerciseOffloads the fascia while muscles are being strengthened, preventing re-injury during the rehabilitation phase.
Night SplintsComplements the passive stretch provided by a night splint, ensuring the fascia remains supported throughout the day.
Icing & Anti-InflammatoriesProvides the mechanical support necessary to sustain the anti-inflammatory benefits achieved through rest and medication.

    Conclusion

While advanced treatments like custom orthotics, corticosteroid injections, or even surgery are sometimes necessary, the felt arch pad remains a cornerstone of effective, conservative care for Plantar Fasciitis. Its capacity for targeted support, low cost, customization, and immediate pain relief makes it an invaluable first step in breaking the cycle of pain and inflammation, paving the way for a successful recovery.
Atlas Biomechanics manufactures felt arch pads in either 10 packs or 100 bulk packs
