[Purpose] Hallux valgus is one of the most common deformations of the human foot, and it causes great difficulties for the patients. The aim of this paper was to review available medical literature in search of evidence which would justify implementation of physiotherapy, based on its effectiveness for patients with hallux valgus.
[Subjects and Methods] The following databases were searched for applicable papers: PubMed, Google Scholar, Clinical Key and UpToDate. Full-text articles from the last 15 years were subjected to a review, which ultimately selected seven papers about hallux valgus therapy published over the past 12 years. These studies were grouped according to their design and level of evidence and classified depending on whether they concerned physiotherapy as postoperative therapy or as the only treatment.
[Results] The studies included in the present analysis used the following interventions for patients with hallux valgus: exercise, manual therapy, gait training, taping and orthosis. All the studies showed beneficial effects and the most frequently observed results were reductions in pain and improvements in function.
[Conclusion] The evidence found in the reviewed materials clearly indicates that patients with hallux valgus should not only be subject to surgical procedures but also undergo physiotherapeutic treatment.

Aim: To compare the effects of progressive exercise therapy, performed under the supervision of a physiotherapist and given as a home program in individuals with hallux valgus. Methods: Participants were randomly divided into two groups. While one group performed the exercises under the supervision of a physiotherapist, the other group did the same program at home. Results: The amount of decrease in foot adduction angle, pain level while walking, and right foot navicular height of individuals receiving treatment under the supervision of a physiotherapist were significantly higher. Conclusion: The exercise program applied under the supervision of a physiotherapist was more effective in reducing the first toe adduction angle, medial longitudinal arc height, and pain, improving dynamic balance and functional capacity.

Dynamic-passive correction of hallux valgus and associated static foot

Purpose: The paper presents, the effects of hallux valgus correction and coexisting static
deformities of the foot (transversely-plano and plano-valgus foot) obtained with a new
dynamic-passive method of treatment.
Methods: The study involved 50 patients; 26 with full big toe correction after the passive
correction grip (group I) and 24 with big toe correction requiring additional passive abduction
(group II). The patients regularly performed exercises using the designed device according to
the planned schedule. The progress of the correction was assessed by a medical examination
and additional tests.
Results: The cross-sectional area [cm2] of the abductor hallucis muscle in three-time points
among I and II groups of patients with the Hallux Valgus was measured based on MRI
images. The STIR examination showed among other the abductor hallucis muscle edema after
exercises with the DPc device were carried out. It evidences that exercises with the new
device activate the muscle. Alignment of the big toes of both feet in groups I and II were
obtained with a statistically significant result (p<0.05). The percentage progression of
correction for HV and I/II IM was calculated.
Conclusions: Based on the new correction approach the alignment of the big toe phalanges
and the remaining toes was obtained. The passive setup of the tendons with their distal inserts
at the level of the big toe phalanges to the correct path of their course with the withdrawal of
articular subluxations was obtained. Simultaneously, the big toe's passive correction was
dynamically consolidated through a specially selected set of exercises.
