We had a patient at Manchester Foot Hospital who had amputated his thumb in a work place accident. He had his hallux harvested for his hand. This is over 30 years ago so I cannot remember details such as post surgical neuropathy - but he was essentially happy with the result. There used to be a youtube flick of an idiot diver that got his thumb amputated by a lobster - yes it can happen. He had his 2nd pedal digit transplanted to his hand with great success. It was not just his digit that was removed; in order to retain as much function as possible, I seem to remember that the whole ray was removed - maybe even a cuneiform - cannot remember. As a fellow diver who has picked up several lobsters in years gone by, one has to wonder at his stupidity!
