Ive noticed in our new supply catalogue , Penthrox inhalers for analgesia are available.

    (Methoxyflurane)

Has anyone used these for anxious patients receiving local anasthesia ? And if so, what did you think of the product?

    thanks

I haven't used it but Penthrox is an S4 medication, so restricted to Endorsed Podiatrists, or in WA "Podiatrists who have completed specific training".
I would/have used a single dose of temazapam, lorazepam to overcome the anxiety to a needle.

We had this debate also as it wasn't on the list of S4 for endorsed prescribers so are unsure where it fits.

General pod's can use limited S4's so you might need to call the PBA prior to ordering.

It is on the list for endorsed Podiatrists, both the Victorian and National (NSW) lists under pain management.

Yes, I use the penthrox inhaler for needle-phobic patients....mostly teens, but occasionally adults as well. It works to alleviate anxiety and pain.
I find it works very well, particularly for the anxious patients……occasionally too well. I’ve had to “wrestle” it away from a small number who didn’t want to give it up post LA injections!!
They have pretty much fully recovered by the end of the procedure, but it’s advisable that they don’t drive or operate machinery for the rest of the day.
I find that it’s a very useful product, and would thoroughly recommend it for the appropriate patient.
