I am attaching my translation of the abstract of an article appearing in a French podiatry research journal. It look very interesting.

I am about to use the manage attachments facility for the first time so wish me luck.

That didn't work so back to the drawing board

    Varithotics.

Algret Pierre, Raveau Ivan L, Forestier Odette, Odille Louis.

    J De Reserche en Podologie; 2011; 64(3): 250-267.

This orthosis/insert control system allows the density of the wedge sections or other parts of the orthosis/insert, the 'control surfaces,' to be modified (increased or decreased) during gait as required.

The essential components of the control system are: electrorheological control surfaces, eg wedges; controlled by a series of Pietzoelectric devices; a series of capacitors which store the generated electricity; a pre-programmable chip controlling the timing and rate of dicharge of the capacitors, ie the point during the gait cycle that the density of the control surface begins to change and the extent and period of the change of density. The timing and extend of capacitor discharge is controlled through a pre-programmed chip using RolyPoly sotware.

Power is generated by a series of low cost polymer Pietzoelectric devices inserted within the heel of the shoe. The charge is transmitted to the rest of the conrtol system incorporated within the body of the orthosis/insert via contingent electrical contacts in the upper apsect of the heel of the shoe and the lower aspect of the heel of the orthosis/insert.

Electricity generated at each heel strike is stored in a series of capacitors. The timing of the rate of capacitor discharge, under the indirect control of RolyPoly software, allows almost instantaneous modification of the density of the control surfaces. The temporal and discharge parameters can be modified as required and include a random option, where cerffully selected ranges are given to certain of the discharge parameters allowing different levels of control at each step to simulate undulating terrain and minimise the risk of repetitive strain injury.

Changes in density of the control surfaces are accomplished by the use of compression sensitive giant electrorheological (GER) fluid consisting of urea coated nanoparticles of Barium Titanium Oxalate suspended in Silicone oil. The GER is contained in an additively manufactured open cell polyurethane matrix and bounding outer cover. During the additive maufacturing process the capacitance plates are bonded to the inner surface of the polyurethane matrix.

Haven't mastered managing attachments yet so I have typed it in. I didn't have anything better to do anyway.

    Enjoy!

Really interesting stuff - wonder how practical it will be e.g. cost, size, weight, durability.

  4. I think I remember reading about this somewhere else. It was A compound which changed state with eletrical impulse. Lirpa 1 I think it was called.

    Exciting stuff!

Sorry guy's and I will trust the article is genuine but when I saw "RolyPoly software" I had to wonder as it is April 1st..........

I probably wrong but if it is an April fool then an awesome one it is.......then again maybe I'm the ignorant fool :)

  6. I wrote about this concept previously, think it was in the barefoot running thread. These guys have done it- cool.

We, the undersigned authors of the above article on 'Varithotics', are grievously wounded by the vexatious and libelous accusations contained within this column, questioning the veracity of our claim. We have therefore decided to seek recourse in law.

Veuillez croire messieurs/mesdames à l'expression de mes sentiments les plus distingués.

Monsieur Rolland Yohan Poly, the author of 'RolyPoly' software, hereby gives notice of his intent to seek redress for the defamatory and insulting remarks made in this column concerning the afore mentioned 'RolyPoly' software.

PS The lads have asked me, as a pretty good approximation of a native English speaker, to represent them and have informed me of their generous offer to settle out of court.

So as soon as you have liquidated your assets, ie sold the business and house and done whatever you have to do to the family jewels, we can begin negotiations.

    Yours as ever,

    Bill

    have a nice day.

  10. Lirpa 1. Every year. Nice one!
