Amidst all the strife in the world, it is worth remembering those who single-handedly create something for the benefit of their fellow men and creatures to enjoy. John Muir is one of my heroes - and one of the few Scots to grace California's Hall of Fame for his preservation of the great wilderness through his Trust. Today's Sunday Herald carries this excellent piece on his life.

  2. Muir Woods, just north of San Francisco, was one of my favorite places to run while in podiatry school at CCPM. John Muir is very well known in California. Glad to hear his legend is becoming more well known elsewhere.

There used to be a little pub on the front in Sausalito called Patterson's Bar (not sure if it's still there) - the guy that ran it in 1990 was Scottish - and had photographs from all the National Parks that John Muir had help create. Until that point, I had no idea that the man had done so much in North America - he had contributed so much in Scotland, but it is a small country and he clearly had his eye on bigger things. A truly remarkable man indeed.

It is quite amazing what fame will do for you. John Muir lived less than 30 minutes from where I live now. On the way to visit his house you can drive by the John Muir Hospital and the John Muir business park.

    Great man.
