Hi everyone,

Does anyone know whether or not we can get specialist recognition as podiatrists with insurance companies like Bupa or AXA PPP? I had a look on AXA's website and we don't seem to be listed as those who can apply.

Hi Sarah,

AXA PPP will not cover what they deem 'conservative podiatry' (only podiatric surgery). So the answer is no, you cannot be recognised by/registered with with AXA (unless you are a Podiatric Surgeon of course).

Bupa is fine with Podiatry, but in order to register you have to have been qualified for 5 years, and provide 2 referees (both Bupa recognised Consultants who currently refer you patients). You fill out a form (about 3-4 sides of A4 unless its changed in the last few years), post it off to them with copies of your various certification (HPC reg, degree, post-grad quals etc) and you wait up to 6 weeks until you hear back from them and they issue you with your provider number. You then are registered as an 'umbrella consultant' which bascially means that for patients to see you and claim it through their Bupa policy they will have to be referred to you by a Consultant - referrals from other health professionals such as Physios, Osteopaths (and I even think their GP) will not be sufficient.

Some of the smaller insurers (WPA, Cigna, Pru Health etc) are much easier to register with, usually just a one sided piece of A4 paper with some details to fill out and faxed to them.
