Patient safety comes first. If anyone refuses to meet the requirements of any job they signed on for, they should be sacked.

In this case the following of the hygiene protocols is part of the required skills for the job. Any reason (lack of skills, religion etc) not to do it makes you unsuitable for the job.

This type of publicity makes me wonder if these individuals are trying to abide by their religious convictions or just scoring points on ''we do not need to abide by the rules.''

Surely anyone with an ounce of sense can see the reasoning behind complying with infection control.

    World's going mad.

Perhaps these individuals should not be in the medical profession at all. Isn't there something about swearing ''Thou shalt do NO harm''?

Therefore to refuse to comply with basic infection control policy indicates the intent to potentially do harm?

I think that we will find that rational discussion between rational people of any faith will pretty rapidly deal with this one. However, it does raise one or two interesting points:

I have recently suffered from a couple of psoriatic plaques on my forearms. This is not a problem in theatre where I can scrub as normal and then gown and glove. However, if the 'bare arm' scenario is to be applied across the board, then is it more likely that skin squames from the plaques will carry microbes into post-op wounds than if the arms were covered? I have not, thus far carried out a 'bug hunt' but it gives one pause for thought.

I will be interested to hear the experiences of any practitioner with similar conditions.
