Just thought I would indulge myself in a little low level Jingoism.

There is no doubt that Britain needs a little boost to its self image and if Britain needs it Scotland needs it ten times more.

Anyone thinking of invading Britain or Scotland missed their chance yesterday. The three hours of the Wimbledon men's tennis final, with at least half of the nation glued to the television (though come to think of it, what's new), was the ideal opportunity but having missed that opportunity the next week to a month or as long as the euphoria lasts, would not be a good time to attempt an invasion.

I think I feel a song coming on, sing along if you feel like it " O flower of Scotland, when will we see your likes again........."

The words of that song badly need updating, it's just wall to wall nostalgia, head turned backwards all the time. Maybe a few more Murray moments can help to turn it back to the future so to speak?

'Oh what a beautiful morning, Oh what a beautiful day I've got a wonderful feeling, everything's going my way. There's a bright golden hinge on the meadow, .......'

For years I thought that was what the song said, 'There's a bright golden hinge on the meadow'. It's funny how easily the human mind can accommodate surreal ideas. When I finally discovered that the correct word was 'fringe' it down graded the image considerably.

Time to stop, plant my feet firmly on the ground and get back to reality.

    Have a good day.

'If I can help somebody as I travel on my way, then my living shall not be in drains'.

Thought the best image of the day was Wee Eck draping the Saltire round Cameroon's shoulders...Seemingly the LTA got their own back and refused to accept his £20 RBS note in the bar afterwards...

See if the ugly fish is smiling so broadly after the independence vote. I'm sure Cameron will be thinking that he who laughs last, laughs longest.

Anyway, speaking as an Englishman, send me all your Scottish 20 quid (and other denomination) notes, I'll not insult you by refusing them!

    Cheers

The opening song of the musical Oklahoma, sung by Curly, goes like this:

There is no fringe or hinge in this song. However one of the later songs in the musical is "The Surry with the Fringe on Top".

This is one of my favorite Rogers and Hammerstein musicals...and the first one they ever wrote together.

Talk about canny. That way he keeps both ends of the Scottish political spectrum happy.

If his RBS 20 pound note had been accepted spending it would have been taken as a sign of proligacy but having at least offered everyone in the bar a drink shows his inherent generosity.

The fact that he was trying to buy a round for everyone in the bar on 2O pounds is of course a statement in its own right. Maybe he was trying to make a comment on the comparative value of Scottish money or possibly he hasn't put his hand in his pocket much in the last forty years?

    Thanks kevin,

These are songs from my childhood, heard on English and Scottish radio and although I got a few words wrong, then and now, I use them and other songs as examples of how easily very young childen learn. I am sure that like me you and many others have the words of songs in your head, dating from early childhood, that got their without you having to make any effort at all to learn them.

NB The Surrey with the Fringe on Top.

    Best wishes,

    Bill

  8. I'm no Nationalist but I hope that when the time comes, it's a Yes at the finishing line. For three reasons.
First; it would help put an end to the "woe me" culture that exists north of the border, my home county is legendary for it. Sit at home and watch the telly and blame the Inglish for everything. The fat, lard overloaded moaners would have to get off their backsides and make it work, if Scotland was to be independent. The trouble is that this group will probably vote No just so they can keep at home and moan. Which is all they know.
Second: A separate parliament would reduce the power of the United Kingdom - or at least change the balance. After the recent two decades experience, that would be no bad thing. Power corrupts. Absolute power - or the lust for it - corrupts absolutely. And whilst we're at it - thank goodness for Ed Snowdon who has single-handedly, shone a torch in that corner.
Thirdly; the older I get the more I think that small is better. Not only would I welcome an independent Scotland, I would also welcome regional governance at county or even parish level - under a globally recognised framework.

Anyhow the sun's still out the BBQ is still on. Rant over!

    Thanks for the spelling correction.

Here you go with the lyrics to "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top"....great musical!

I sang in school choirs from the ages of 9 to 16 and we performed many of the songs from "Oklahoma" in front of audiences quite a few times. I still know nearly all of these songs by heart.

It's amazing to me that I can still recall these lyrics to this day, now over four decades later, but can't hardly remember what I did yesterday....
