Partial Tear Issue

    Hi Guys,

    Was just wanting to find out some of your thoughts with treatments towards abductor digiti minimi partial tears? also, treatments for partial tear for any other muscles in the foot :)

  2. Hey Mate

    This would generally be a very nigglie injury to fix. The key things to look at are:

    1) The footwear they are in and the pressure that would be applied over the area and the way you can reduce it so the tissue can heal
    2) Biomechanically how did the injury come about and how can you prevent it from happening again and again change the forces that are applied to the area that will prevent it from healing. Usually people would have a gastroc/soleus equinus or osseous equinus that can result in a forefoot abductory twist during midstance to toe off. Depending on the shoes they are in, it could result in over loading of that area. So you can start fixing these biomechanical issues with mobilisations with movements, stretching or sending them to a Physio.
    3) Look at the what movements make it painful, putting it under stress and stretching a tear would usually do it, so look at strapping the toe with a fan strap to help reduce this. Again the 5th digit is tiny and an absolute pain to fix some times and it would be trial and error as to what shoes relieve it and them being on their feet.

    Depending on the severity, my best guess would be a surgeon won't touch it until all conservative measures have been exhausted or it doesn't seem to improve at all.

    I see your post was done in March, so let me know what you did and if it worked. I have treated a few Jones fractures and stress fractures close to the 5th MPJ. I have also managed a few plantar fascia tears with strapping, orthotics and a lot of physiotherapy work on the surrounding structures that cause the biomechanical overloading. The hardest aspect with these foot injuries is footwear and managing weight-bearing activities properly so the body gets time to heal. Hope this was helpful
