    Dear collective,

I have a patient with a confirmed plantar fibroma which is painful. He has tried custom orthoses and wears excellent fitting footwear. We have discussed surgical excision. However, he is quite keen to try Verapamil Hydrochloride following an article he read online.

I am by no means against this but it's not on formulary. Would anyone have any alternatives to try?

    Many thanks.

  2. I take that for migraine.

Never heard of it for fibroma...

Hi You could try radial shock wave therapy as an alternative .
I have been using it for trigger point therapy and tendonopathy with good success .
If you dont know about it google radial shock wave therapy or eswt.

    Regards

    Charles

A series of injections of a corticosteroid? I have had reasonable success with injections and accomodative orthotics in my patients. It is rare that I operate for fibromas.

    To all,
Very interesting using a Calcium blocker, but be warned it looks like this medication has a specific purpose.
This the description copied from a web site about VH

"Verapamil Hydrochloride is an oral and intravenous calcium-channel blocking (CCB) agent. It is useful for the treatment of angina, hypertension, and for supraventricular tachyarrhythmias. Verapamil Hydrochloride is considered a class IV antiarrhythmic agent and it is more effective than digoxin for controlling ventricular rate in patients with atrial fibrillation. Verapamil Hydrochloride can be effective in decreasing left ventricular hypertrophy, presumably due to its afterload-reducing effects, and has been shown to decrease reinfarction in patients with uncompromised left ventricular function, although no reduction in mortality was observed.

Verapamil Hydrochloride’s innovator is BU EUROPE and appears world-wide under the brand names; Calan, Calan Sr, Covera-Hs, Isoptin Sr, Verelan and Verelan Pm."

I think the patient should be guided by a GP or podiatrist rather than self diagnosing. What are his other underlying complaints and what other medication his he on.

+1. Also works on my cluster headaches. I had read somewhere about the fibroma use but cannot remember where.

Will see if I can find it again.
